President! MeKinley's Protector
Considerable interest is being taken
in the plan to start a. fund for the purchase of a- home" in Washington for
James B Parker, the colored man
whose prompt action at the time of the
attack upon President MeKinley last
week is credited with preventing the
anarchist from firing athirdshot. It
has been decided by a committee appointed at a meeting in the Metropolitan A. M. E. church, of Washington,
Thursday evening, that the local newspapers be requested to receive contributions to the fund, and the Observer
will be one of the first to thus receive
subscriptions. Who will start the
ball?

came the derivative "namely" and the

Actually MnnuraQturlnR Marble.
Manufacturers are actually making
marble by the same process by which
nature makes it, only in a few weeks
instead of a "e-vj thousand years. They
take "5 Sther §oft limestone and
Chemically perjagate it with, various
coloring matter's, which sink Into the
stone, and are not a mere surface coloring, as in scagllola. The completed
material'-takes a fine polish, and many
of the specimens are of beautiful color

about one-third the price of nature's

They Present All tbe Phenomena ot
Animal and Vegetable Growth.
Why and how is the deer so peculiarly unlike any other of the bovine
race, the horn differing so materially
from all the horned cattle in its composition, growth, maturity and decline? It presents all the phenomena
of animal- and vegetable growth. It
sprouts from the brain -without any
prolongation of the frontal bone. It
rises and breaks through the sinews
and takes "root on the bone, growing
the same as a vegetable. It is nourished by and secretes albumen upon
the surface and disposes of the fibrine
the same as an animal. It is'clothed
with a skin and. hairy coat very different from that on the rest of the body.
This covering and hair possesses a
property unknown in other animal
bodies—that of being a styptic to
stanch its own blood when wounded.
It carries marks of the age on the buck
by puting out an extra branch each
year, which shows an additional power
each year to produce them. And this
power does- not exist in the "female.
So this difference is more distinctly
marked than jn any other class of an--
imals. Again, the horn passes props
erties unknown in any othe? auimal;
matter. It is entirely inodorous, capable o£ resis-.ting putrefaction of the at-
ijaQSphe-fe. And still water at 300 de-*
gi*eeS; K. TR-ill dissolve these horns read-
"jjj, *»ven though they are not soluble
15 aleohel and resist the action of acids
BPfl alkalies. It is the only vegeto
animal substance that we "know of that
does not perpetuate itself by procreation. The male and the female are
sustained by the same nutrition and
elements, and the male only produces
horns. This phenomenon is quite as
much of a curiosity as the absence
of the horn in the buck after shedding. - * .

A striking paper on the "Dietet!*
Value of Sugar' appears in last week'a
issue of the British Medical Journal,
hy Dr. "Willoughby Gardner. Roughly
speaking, the world's consumption of
sugar in the last fifteen years has
doubled, while in Great Britain it has
trebled per head In forty years. Another interesting point is that the English and Americans stand easily at the
head of the list as the sugar-eating
nations. Dr. Willoughby Gardner establishes* the fact* that sugar is a potent creator of energy and maintainer
of stamina. This, he contends, is not'
only proved by laboratory ^expe'rl
ments, but "by the case of the date*/
eating Arabs, the fine health of th»
sugar-cane-eating negroes, and the result obtained by Alpine climbers, Arctic explorers, athletes and German sol-
,diers fed. on a special diet- Dr. Willoughby Gardner's general conclusion
is that the increased height and weight
and the improved health of the English people in the last half century
are largely due to-the increased consumption of sugar.
