Ann Arbor will celebrate Labor
Day..
John Bauer, a well respected farmer
of Freedom, died last Thursday.
Dr. Louis P. Hall has been appointed to fill Dr, J. A. Watling's place at
the University.
The Teeumseh ball team played at''
Monroe last Thursday and was sadly
defeated, score 16 to 0.
Leslie Farrell, a young colored man-'
of Detroit, tried to commit suicide at
Milan last Thursday by throwing himself in front of a Wabash train. The
'train men saw him in time to stop.
Residents of the Fifth ward id the
vicinity of the park are quite stirred
up over its appearance. They say that
it is the worst eye-sore in the city,
grass uncut and a wilderness- of weeds.
The marriage of Miss Grace George,
daughter of the late Prof. George of
Ypsilanti, and Allen Loomis of Woodbury, N. Y., took, place last week
Wednesday-at the home of the "bride's
mother in Ypsilanti. -
The board of regents of the U.ofM.
will make a list of the" sanitary boarding and rooming bouses in Ann Arbor.
Houses without sewer connections will
not be listed and they will advise
roomers to keep away from them.
A pretty double wedding occurred
last Wednesday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. E. J. Storms of Ann Arbor,
when Miss Sadie married Dr. Ernest
Wright of Conneaut, Ohio, and Miss
Bessie became the wife of Judd BL
Matthews, a lawyer of Chicago.
Some years ago when farm' machinery first began to. be generally used,
people Used to wonder what all the
tarm laborers would do for work:
Now in these days of scarce help they
wonder what the farmer .would do
without the machinery.-^Chelsea Herald.
A man claiming to be Dr. Copeland
of Ann Arbor, was canvassing" in the
vicinity of Northville selling" spectacles. Sothe 6? the farmers bought
supposing hiin to be the man he represented but some one who was skeptical
wrote to Ann Arbor and soon found
the man to be bogus and he was arrested.
Here is a puzzle for everybody.
Take the number of your living brothers double it, add to it 3, multiply by
5, add to it the number of living sisters, multiply the result by 10, add
the number of deaths of brothers and
sisters and subtract l"jfj! from the re?
suit. The rigl*t hand figure will be
the nutpber o\ living sisters, and the
left will show the number of living
brothers. Try it and see for yourself,
The bootblacks of Ann Arbor,, have
formed a union and as a result shines
can be had for a, nickel instead of a
dime. A Greek ca,m.& to Ann Arbor
;and fitted. u,p an, establishment and was
[gradually, taking- the trade from the
local boys as he had a place where his
customers could sit down while getting
their shine. The boys propose- to
drive the Greek out of town while the
consumer is getting the benefit of the
cut rate.
- An exchange tells of_ a. knowing
ung wife who cured her husband of
staying out late at night in an original way. Before going to bed she
would place two easy chairs together
before the sitting-room grate and -then
hold a lighted match to a cigar until
the room had a faint odor of tobacco
smoke. Although, her. h«shand never
said a word to, l-,er. about noticing anything th/ee '-'-apnl'e,atioW' effected a
complete cuve..
It is a\jood thing that the cars on
the Albio\"^Battle Creek electric line
have baggaw compartments. No one
embarks onTa trip on one of them
without taking along a grip containing
a change? of clothing and a couple of
lunches. There is no telling when One
starts out whea he is going to reach
his destination, *so frequent have the
tie-ups been sinee the road started
what it announces'»as regular services.
—Herald. ThatrOds as, U it might
have been written tj the Valine road.
—Ypsilantian, ^L
The fact that thetNC* is now not a
pjace in the pity whei'e anv stranger
fern, go, and jest, or ert_j. lunch, without disturbing: others]*B_ccej)t the saloon, indicates one ri'neJV speeded improvement. If the me'ro-tiao'tb had one-
half the money tha*. "f.he Fourth of
July celebration cost, in keeping open
Y, W. C. A. rooms, it would have been
a good investment for the city. Hardly a day passes that some one does not
ask if there is not some such convenience, especially people coming in
from the country to spend the-day;
and it would seem a wise policy for the
merchants to maintain a pleasant rest
room for the comfort and convenience
of their patrons.—Ypsilantian.
When Zimmerman Was King.
No cyclist ever took more prizes in
a season than Zimmerman did in 1893.
Their value was $11,850. The most
costly was a gold cup worth $1,000.
Quarantine" Not Needed.
Every spring it has been a precaution of Florida to declare a quarantine against Cuba through fear of
yellow fever. This year no quarantine will be enforced until cases of
yellow fever occur in Cuba.
Might Was Her Terror.
"I would cough nearly all night

WEAK, IRREGULAR,
PAINFUL HEARTS.
Sometimes the heart grows irregular
—is the seat of pain1 and pressure.
People are apt to think it due'to some
organic Oi* structural disease of that
organ, Wtieii thej-cause is comparatively simple—a. weakened motor power—
a trouble 'wholly due to the nervous
bystem, perhaps aggravated by a nervous dyspepsia. Put the nervous system right—give it strength and tone-^
supply through "its medium the heart
with power and the stomach with digestive juices and the trouble fades
like snow in a summer sun. It is for
this wonderful power Dr. A. W. Chase's
Nerve Pills are world famous.
Mrs. Elizabeth Eierstead of 519 5th
Ave., Ann Arbor, Mich., says:. "I was
feeling run down, weak and nervous—
heart irregular and stomach weak last
winter when I saw Dr. A. W. Chase's
Nerve Pills, recommended and got a
box. As a result of their use I no
longer suffer as I did with the nervous
heart trouble—my stomach has become "strong, I rest well at night and
feel stronger in every way. I can .recommend the medicine to others as reliable, safe and certain." For further
information call at Weinmann & Matthews'Drug Store, Saline, Mich. 50c

Varsity Suit, which has been so
long a favorite among young oien
—fellows who want ''snappy"
clothes—is as usual a popular
style this year.
It is so good a style that" the
tendency is to make all the sack
suits like the Varsity model.
