The ladies' waiting room at the depot at Clinton has been closed fqr a

It is hinted that the boys decline to
steal coal for more than one stove.
Judge Kin ne of Ann Arbor, has decided that the county is not liable for
the full amount of Dr. Kapp's bill for
tending smallpox in .Freedom. He
says, however, that Freedom township
board is liable.

The Tecumseh man, who'avbrs that
he saw four ducks and a robin swimming around in a pond in his back
yard when the thermometer registered
14 below zero, had better clean out
that pipe of his and try a different
brand of tobacco.—Detroit Free Press.
Thinking of snow and cold weather
the goose bone prophet o£ the Chicago
Record H- raid last fall predicted that
we would have the severest winter in
40 years, but an early spring. The
winter prediction has certainly been
true, and we hope he has also told the
truth about the coming spring.—Tecumseh News.
Hans Johnson, the U. of M. student
who sued ex-Sheriff Gillen for attaching exempt goods, did not gain a fortune by the suit. He wes given a verdict of §100 damage but did not a,ilow

Ypsilanti merchants are discussing
the early closing movement. Some
think their customers from the country would trade in the country towns
instead of Ypsilanti if stores were
closed at 5:30* Stores in Milan, Saline
and other country towns are open until
lace in tho evening and farmers could
drive there after doing a day's work
and do their trading.—Ex.
The farmer who is out of debt and,

well housed^' and his lar^e?. s^p^ied
with buckwheat floui* s.nft ?resh sausage, is, in a position of greater independence than Pierpont Morgan,
Chauncey Depew, John D. Rockefeller
or any other feller. There may be
timps when the lot of the farmer is full
of care-and anxiety, but most of them
are content and very independent
these cool days.—Milan Leader.
A school ma'am not over a thousand
miles away found a lad in the geogra-
hy class who was deeply interested in
Earning the points of the compass.
ThB teacher said: f'You have in front
of you, the north; on your right, the

•'A patch on 'iny "pants," and to make
the information more emphatic, Allen
continued in a shame-faced manner:
"I knew you'd see it, I told ma you

The rural mail carriers had a hard
time of it Monday *ind Tuesday, the
roads in many places being absolutely
impassable. A rth ur SherwOA^, fo,u,nd
one place near {"te^dfe"; **"hwe t-le &now
had drifted level with the fence lope
and had so thick a crust, upon it that
he was able, to-flrive- over the tops of
the fences. In many cases the carriers
had to return the mail to the office, as
they were not-able to reach the boxes
oa their routes,, the owners- not caring
enough for their mail to shovel out it
path for the carrier.—Ypsilantian.
Charles Burtless has a horse that is
something of a joker. On Tuesday
Charley called on a farmer to see about
some stock and left the horse standing
unhitched. When he was through his
business but before he reached the cutter, the horse started off on "a brisk
trot. Charley ran after him calling
whoa! whoa! but the horse let him get
within about two rods of the cutter and
then would trot along at too fast a gait
for Charley to catch on. He kept this
up until he reached town when a man
stopped him.—Manchester Enterprise.
H. D. Cutting of Tecumseh, has succeeded in getting the promise of Congressman Townsend to present his
case before the TJ. S. Congress. It
seems that he enlisted in the 50th
N. Y. Cavalry and in 1862 for something that he had done he deserted,
came north and re-enlisted under the
name of Henry C. Stratton, serving
until the close of the war. The hardships he underwent in the prison at
Anderaonville caused him to lose his
eyesight, so he claims, but the charge
of desertion standing against him, his
only relief is by a- special act ot Congress.
