Hon. B. C. Whitaker of Scio, has
announced his candidacy for the nomination of county clerk on the democratic ticket.
The Peninsular Manfacturing Co.'s
plant at A nn Arbor, was sold at auction Friday, E. A. Holden of Lansing,
bid it off for $6300.
Fred Coe, a prominent business man
of Ypsilanti, committed suicide in Detroit last week Wednesday, the cause
of the deed was poor health.
Prof. Gardner S. Williams, of the
Cornell University, will succeed the
late Prof. C. S. Greene as dean of the
U. of M. engineering department.
Morenci has 105 widows and 20 widowers, besides a score or more of old
maids and bachelors. And among the
latter class is the Observer editor.—

Wm. H. Springer of Ypsilanti, had
the misfortune to lose his left foot by
having it caught between two cars in
the Michigan Central yards at Ann
Arbor last week Wednesday,
There is some talk of extending the
village limit, and taking in some people who are now living in close proximity. The legislature will have to be

John Kelly of Chelsea, has commenced a suit against the Michigan
Central railroad for S10,000 damages
for injuries received at Dexter last
winter while in the company's employ.
The Michigan Central railroads company are making many needed improvements at Ypsilanti. A new water
lank, another bridge across the Huron
and a new coal dock are being contemplated—Ex.
Beading has a singer who is just Divine. She is also angelic, though she
eats bread and milk, ham and eggs,
tomatoes and olives, and drinketh ice
cream soda. Miss Josie Divine, a
young lady of varied; accomplishments

Over at Milford there is said to be a
great chance for bachelors. According

Athens Indians, who recently received
a bounty from the government, was arrested for drunkenness one day last
week and gave this terse arraignment

The Toledo, Ann Arbor & Detr6it
electric line surveyors have finished
their work in Milan and are out near
Ann Arbor. They surveyed three
routes through this place, and it will
be some time before we know which
one they will build on. The road
comes just a mile west of Dundee.
They propose to make it as straight a
track as they can, so as to make the
running time between Toledo and Ann
Arbor one hour.—Milan Leader.
Between sixteen and seventeen thousand barrels of water will be required
to fill the experimental tank to be used
in the .study of marine engineering at
the U. of. M. the coming college year.
This tank, which is in the new engineering building, is one ef the largest
under coyer in the country. It is 300
feet long, 22 feet wide and from 10 to
12 feet deep. At one end is a dry
dock. There is machinery for towing
the model ships, which, are here tested
at the rate of 800 feet per minute. By

Of the 4,000 white settlers scattered
among the total population of 200,000
in German, Southwest Africa, not
much more than 2,000 are at present
German and these are very largely
