Of the states of the Union only Delaware and South Carolina were without
representation at the University of
Michigan last year, and every territory except Alaska had students in
Ann Arbor. Hawaii, Porto Rica, the
Philippines, Germany, Holland, Turkey, Arabia, Bulgaria, Japan, Mexico,
Colombia, Cuba, England, Jamaica,
Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia each
furnished students to the University.—
News Letter. A most excellent recommend for Michigan's educational
headquarters.
It is rumored in Ann Arbor that an
attempt will be made during the present session of the legislature to abolish
the Washtenaw county board of auditors. By its policy of economy tlie
board has antagonized many county
officers and also caused the displeasure
of P. P. Glazier, wbo wanted W. P.
Rei men Schneider on the board instead
of Wm. Bacon. It is understood that
Glazier is at the bottom of the movement, and that a strong effort, will be
made to remove the board.—Herald.

The North Lake correspondent to
the Chelsea Standard last week wrote
the following: "I never saw or heard
of a dog coming nearer to talking than
our dog Pocto did one day last week.
His playmate and pet cat Tige got
caught jn a trap set for other game.
On seeing the cat's trouble the dog
hastened to the house and would give
no rest until he made us know something was wrong. Just then Perry
Noah cams along and saw the cat in
the trap, and the dog howling around
in trouble. He took the cat out and
received all tho signs of thankfulness
it is possible for a dog to make, then
he carried the good news to each mem
ber of the family, mumbling all the
time as if trying to talk.
An electric light wife broke near
Dr. Catlin's resideuce, last night, and
one of tbe pieces dropping upon a telephone wire burned out a fuse in the
telephone exchange. The night operator was frightened by the blaze and
sticking her head out of a window
yelled "fire." Night Watchman Bennett heard the cry and rang the alarm
on the council building bell, which
called out the fire department. Meanwhile Doii Heesen proved to he the
hero of the" occasion by running into
lhe office and putting out the fire with
a pail of water. Nevertheless the
phones were all out of service for a
few hours.—Tecumseh News.

The following may be old to some,
but no doubt others will enjoy it, as I
saw it in the'Ladies' Home Journal:
"A clergyman was anxious to introduce some hymn books into the church
and arranged that tlie clerk was to
give out the notice immediately after
the sermon. The clerk, however, had
a notice ot his own to give with reference to the baptism of infants. Accordingly he arose and announced
that—
'All those who have children whom
they wish to have baptized please send
in their names at once to the clerk.'
The clergyman, who was somewhat
deaf, assumed that the clerk was giv-t
ing out the hymn book notice and Immediately arose and said: 'And I
should say for the benefit of those who
haven't any, that they may obtain
some from the ushers any day from 3
to-4 o'clock; the ordinary little ones al
one shilling each and special ones at
one shilling and fourpence.' "—Union-

A Philadelphia bank clerk has a
colle6tion of queer checks. One is
written on a linen collar, another on a
cuff, a third on a piece of lath. The
wooden check was drawn by the owner
of a sawmill, who found himself at the
plant, thirty miles from any house and
without cheek-book or paper. He
made out the check for two hundred
and fifty dollars on the wood, in the
usual form. After some discussion the
bank authorities paid the money.—

Saved From Terrible Death.
The family of Mrs. M. L. Bobbitt of
Bargerton, Tenn., saw her dying- and
were powerless to save her. The most
skillful physicians and every remedy
used, failed, while consumption was
slowly but surely taking her life. In
this terrible hour Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption turned despair
into joy. The first bottle brought immediate relief and its continued use
completely cured her. It's the most
