of Manchester, which occurred last
August, has just come to light.
The Occidental hotel at Ypsilanti
has changed hands, the new owner being Robert M. Cooper, of Union City.
he citizens of South Lyons are appreciating dark streets this week, owing to an accident to the electric light
plant.
The knitting department of the Ypsilanti Underwear Co. will be removed
to x)etroit, owing to the difficulty in
securing help.
A §10,000 stone gate has been ordered for Ferry Field at Ann Arbor and
will be completed by July 1, and for
beauty will rival anything seen in this
country.
_ The young men of the Milan high
school are preparing to give a debate
in the near future, as to whether the
new electric line will ba completed.
A most difficult problem.
Robert Begole, the Ann Arbor conductor who was stricken blind two
weeks ago, has tjopes of again being
able to. see, The physician attributes
the cauae lo hemorrhage.
Clarence and Luther Brooks of Cliu-
ton, have been arrested on the charge
of assault and battery npon Thomas
and Will Lowry, and the fo>mer gets
30 days in Adrian jail and tho latter
90 days in the Detroit house of correction. Thfese men are both tough characters and have been before the bar of
justice quite a number of times.
During the year 1905 there were 376
marriage licenses issued. Only 13
were to colored people. The oldest
applicant was John Martin of Manchester, 75 years and his bride was Eliza
Cash, jus"; one-third his age or 25
years. The youngest person was Elsie
Sellers of Milan. 16 years and her husband is Clinton Bordine, 19 years.
There were three couples married
with both bride and groom over 60
years of age.
Can any of our neighboring towns
rival Manchester in general sweetness?
Let them sp,lye %ha following problem
and see. If ope of our stores sells 600
pounds pf candy* during the holidays,
how many pounds should the ten
stores which deal in that toothsome
article sell, and what a snap for the
dentist?—Messenger. Brother, we
will go one better, one of our dealers
during the four days preceding Cb rist-
mas sold a little over a half ton of
candy.
By the completion of the Western
Ohio Traction Co.'s electrio line it is
now possible fan a person in Chelsea to
start out and travel all the way to Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Columbus or
Cleveland, or even to Titusville, Pa.,
by direct line. It- is stated that it will
be only a short time when through
tickets will, be sold from Detroit to
Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Columbus
via the electric lines and baggage
checked through. It is also probable
that through cars will be run, thus
avoiding the necessity of changing
cars at points where different roads
begin.—Chelsea Herald.
The Way of the World.
An exchange contains the following
bit of wisdom:' "When a hog eats an
ear of corn, every other hog will trot
along behind and squeal and beg,-and
is ready for a bite. But just let that
hog get his head fast in a crack in tbe
fence, and every other hog will jump
onto him aud tear him to pieces. Just
so with men. As long as a man is prosperous and has plenty of money, he
can't keep his friends off with a club.
The moment he is unfortunate and his
wealth all gone he is not only snubbed
by all his former associates but they do
him all tbe harm possible. When a
man starts down grade the world steps
aside and greases the track."
Most Popular Christian Names.
Some years ago a tabulation of the
names of 100,000 English men and
-women was made. The twenty-five
Christian names that were most common among them are as follows, the
relative popularity of each being
shown hy the order in which they
stand: Mary, William, John, Elizabeth,
Thomas, George, Sarah, James,
Charles, Henry, Alice, Joseph, Ann,
Jane, Ellen, Emily, Fredrick, Annie,
Margaret, Emr«,, Eliza; Robert, Arthur, Alfred, E^-pard. Twelve of these
are women's names, an<" thirteen are
men's names. Two-thirds of the 100,-
000 persons bore one or the other of
the twenty-five, the rest di""ding
among them names in great variety.

Readiness for Emergencies.,
For most of ns the best preparation
for emergencies is sleep enough and
food enough, work enough and play
enough, and a lot of little troubles. If
you keep a clear head and a steady
hand, and a habit of dealing with
everyday difficulties capably yon are
more ready for possible emergencies
than the man is who depends upon an
armcory of tools and weapons wbich
are rusty from disuse.—Exchange.
A Grim Trasreily
is daily enacted, in thousands of homes,
as Death claims, in eash one, another
victim of Consumption or Pneumonia.
But when Coughs and Colds are properly treated, the tragedy is averted.
F. G. Hgntley of Oaklandon, Ind.,
writes: "My wife had the consumption, and three doctors gave her up.
Finally she took Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and
Colds, which cured her, and to-day
she is well and strong." It kills the
germs of all diseases. One dose relieves. Guaranteed at 50c and SI.00 by
the Corner Drug Store. Trial bottles
free. .

Something New In Science.
In one of his letters William Brooii-
JBeld tells, bow. as school inspector,
he bad tq give an examination on
physical science, "What was I to do?
I knew nothing about hydrogen or
oxygen or any other 'gen.' So I set
them a paper, wbich I called 'applied
science." One of my Questions was,
"What would you do to cure a cold in
the head?' A young lady answered, T
should put my feet into hot water till-
-jo'i were in a profuse psrspirslloa." "-'
