One of Manchester's citizen3 wants
the village divided that he and his
neighbors may have a little town of
their own. He possibly is one oi those
fellows who is never satisfied unless he
can have the greater part to say in all
village management.
The South Lyon- Herald says that
Whitmore Lake is to have a fine new
school building, the district having
voted $2 000 for that purpose. §2.000
these days will go only a short way toward the building of a new and modern
grade school building.
Ypsilanti a well-governed town because, forsooth, the police naye made
but two arrests in a stated time! Tell
it to the people who are sitting up
nights- to keep the burglars out, or
sleeping with pepper under their pillows to dose them if they get in.
They will appreciate it—Ypsilantian.
Dean M. Seabolt of this city, former

Mr. E. Forsyth lost 100 broilers a
few nights ago, caused by a disease
which is known as the "black" or probably •'white clutch." This disease is
becoming quite common in these parts.
The only sure cure so far as we have
been able to determine is a good shotgun, loaded to the muzzle.—Pittsfield

Friday was a great day for 'fishing
at North Lake, hundreds of fish being
pulled out during the afternoon. Two
Chelsea gentlemen hooked in all 333

other 16S. Other fishing parties were
equally successful.—Chelsea Herald.

The Lake Shore people here are confident that a new depot building will
be erected here this season. Agent
Spencer thinks they will begin work
in September and finish in 60 days.
It is generally understood that the
building will ba patterned after one at
Angola, Indiana, which is said to be
a large and fine looking building and
fitted with modern conveniences.—

Herman Lindenschmitt of Saline,
while driving about Whitmore Lake
Wednesday evening with .Arthur Judson, Harry Gilleu and Bradley Granger, just averted a runaway hy good
horsemanship. They were ridxng about
S o'clock, when tne horse became suddenly frightened and started up a
fierce run becoming almost unmanag-
able. But Mr. Lindenschmitt lost
neither his control nor his nerve, so
nothing more serious happened than a
shake up, as the wagon bumped over
ruts, cleared trees and bounded over
an occasional bowlder. B'lt the ride
was more than the company had bargained for.—Argus-D.

A Legend of Gold.
Lucifer craved one boon of God
After his fall, as his own to hold;
So He gave him a mite in Heaven's sight,
But lo! the gift that He gave was—
gold.
And Lucifer wrought with the rugged
ore
v 'Till he fashioned it wondrous fair, and
then
He set a price on the precious store,
And the price was the blood and tears
of men.
Blood and tears! and the price was paid-;
Blood was nothing, and tears were free;
And Lucifer smiled at the fools and said:
"Surely your souls should belong to
me!"
So he offered the earth with its golden
heart,
And the seas with their fleets from pole,
to pole;
And they looked with lust on the world
wUe mart,
And said in their hearts—"It is -worth
the soul!"
And kings were they, and they ruled right
well, «
Gorgeously specr their sovereign day . . .
But Lucifer hath their souls in Hell,
And their gold and their empires—
where are they?
—Charles Hamilton Musgrove in The
Header Magazine.

Infant's Remarkable Escape.
Whatever the reason, there is no
disputing that infants live after mishaps which would have meant certain
death to older folks. Whenever there
is a big accident -which has involved
great loss of life, one nearly always
reads of the remarkable escape of
many children.

Pedestrians at Fault.
At a recent dinner of the Society of
Motor Manufacturers, the opinion was
expressed hy a speaker that pedestrians were the greatest sinners on the
road. There is no douht that they
have a way of colliding with the cars,
and not infrequently clogging the delicate machinery with pieces of themselves.
A Touching Story
is the saving from death, of the baby
girl of Geo. A. Eyler, Cumberland,
Md. He writes: "At the age of 11
months, our little girl was in declining
health, with serious Throat trouble,
and two physicians gave her up. We
were almost in despair, when we resolved to try Dv> King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and
Colds." The first bottle gave relief;
after taking four bottles she was cured,
and is now in perfect health." Never
