Model Roadbeds.
State Roadway Commissioner H. S.
Earle met with the highway commissioners of Washtenaw county at Ann
Arbor Saturday, and' explained the
plan by which the s$ate will pay part
of tbe cost of building; a mile or more
of model roadbed in tho country. The
local commissioners asked many questions and received much helpful information about their work. Commissioner Richard Gorton of Ypsilanti
town, held the record for continuous
service, having been in his present
office • fourteen years, and Senator
Earle said that it is a good thing for a
township to keep an officer long enough
to let him carry out extensive plans
and put the township in good condition.—Ypsilantian.
Conscience Smitten.
Someone from Ann Arbor has sent
to the Pontine, Oxford & Northern
Railway company at Pontiac "*>4 with
a letter printed with pen and ink so
that the writing cannot be recognized.
The letter was postmarked Ann Arbor
and says: "Place this in the treasury.
I did not receive the money, but was
instrumental in helping the other fellow get it."—Times.
Counties Quarrel.
A suit by summons has been begun
by Lenawee county against Jackson
county. The amount involved is S300
and is founded on a claim of a c*ertain
Fred Weeks, who went to that county
and was taken sick, 'he claiming that
he is a resident of Jackson county.
The matter h is been discussed between
the poor authorities.—Enterprise.
Rare Specimen.
A couple of months ago J. O. Mort-
enson caught a badger alive and kept
it until one day last week when 'he
took it to Ann Arbor and sold it to the
U. of M. museum. They claim it is
the first Michigan badger to be seen in
many years. It will be killed and
mounted for txhibitlon in the museum.

Narrow Escape.
A steam radiator in the chemic-sl
laboratory at the University exploded
last Thursday sending a mass of iron
into the ceiling above, then falling to
the floor almost breaking through into
the room below. Steam filled the
room, which scattered the inmates and
all the windows. -Luckily no one was
hurt. * :

Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Ballard of Willis,
celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary Saturday.
Two brothers in Oakland county, up
to January 15, Sold' !j"550 worth of fur,
including mink and skunk.
Charles O. Barnes, assistant postmaster at Ypsilanti, dropped dead in
his office one day last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Adam Gcelz of Ann
Arbor, report the first pair of twins
recorded under the new law.
The weather has been cold enough
to freeze the feet of Alf red. Cook of
Superior. He may lose many of his
toes.
Dr. R. S. Copeland of Ann Arbor,
removed a growth about the size of a
hen's egg, from the throat of an Eaton
county lady.
A new parochial school for the
church of Our Lady of the Sacred
Heart' of Chelsea, will be built next
summer and will cost 520,000.
Samuel E. Cranson of Northville,
has bee'u appointed to the position of
assistant car mossenger for the Bureau
of Fisheries at Washington, D. C.
Miss Nellie Stocking of Chelsea, recently started a mushroom bed in her
cellar and she is now supplying her
friends with the toothsome mushrooms.
Some young men of Ypsilanti, miscalculated where a large tree would
fall and smashed down a telephone
pole and tore the cable for a considerable distance.
The intermediate department of the
Congregational Sunday School of Ypsilanti, held a jolly penny social to
raise §5 for. some leaflets but they
cleared §lo instead.
The White Portland Cement Co. ar,
Four Mile Lake, has two large judgments to meet and if they are not paid
by April 2, the entire plant will be
sold to satisfy the claims.

Spanish Drug Store Regulation.
In Spain drug stores are permitted
to sell drugs all day on Sunday, but to
deal in perfumery on that day is unlawful. Candy cannot lawfully be sold
later than 11 o'clock in the forenoon unless no clerks or assistants
are ennloyed. Proprietors may keejj
open all day if they do the work them-=
selves.
