Cougressmau C. E. Town&eud gave
ah-eloquent response to„the toast, "The
United States," at the banquet of the
Hibernian society of Charleston, S. C,
at the conclusion of which many members crowded around him and pressed }
his hands while the applause was al- i
most deafening. Mr. Legare, who was
recently iu Michigan with Mr. Town-

Ann Arbor's Gas Lights.
A promineat citizen of Ann Arbor
was heard to remark the other day
that the gas street lights were very
unsatisfactory. Many of thera go for a
loug time unlighted, and as an instance
cited the one located at the corner of
lngalls aud Monroe streets, which he
claimed had not been lighted for over
a week. On others the mantles are
broken and the light no better than
a tallow caudle. He further said that
there was no care taken iu lighting
and caring for these lambs, which
need intelligent attention the same as
do the electric lights, in order lo give
good service- *'I thought at first,"
continued this gentleman, "that the
combination of gas with electricity for
street lighting would be a fine thing,
but so far have teeu disappointed, for
.the reason that the gas lights have not
had proper care. ^ If tliere.i.- any city
official.in.charge ot thU. work,- be is
| neglecting his duty."
