Happenings qf Interest Gathered for the
"Benefit qf Our'Readers.
Improving The Service.
The Michigan Central railroad does
not propose to be behind the times in
the matter of railroad improvements.
During the past few weeks the road
has installed five large engines of the
Pacific type which is the biggest locomotive in existence, having twelve
wheels under it and weighing about
100 tons. These engines can easily
draw a train of * twelve cars along at
the rate of sixty miles per hour. The
road has also added a dozen or so ol
new coaches of the most modern type,
with high back seats, in fact everything for the convenience and comfort
of the traveler.

Old Ladies Monopoly.'
Thursday, July 19, 20 ladies met at
the home ol Mrs, Ellen Richart for- a
social visit. The combined ages of the
company was 1,502 years and the com-,
bined -weight 2,596 lbs. The oldest
lady was 87 years of. age and weighed
130 lbs, the youngest was 54 years of
age and weighed. 1444 lbs. Three of
the ladies were past 80 years of age
and 6 were past 70 years. Where is.
there a town that can out-do Macon in
the age and weight of its old ladies.—

Dexter has 271 children of school
age.
Alvin Baldwin of Lima, cut 35 loads
of hay from 12 acres.
Fourteen cans of black bass has been
planted at Bass Lake.
Mrs. Mary Keeter of Dexter, died
July 17, aged 92 years.
Grasshoppers are doing considerable
damage around Hamburg.
A new weekly paper is to be started
at Clinton by E.C. VsinDeMark. • ,
Manshester is discussing the question of holding" an- after-harvest festival.
Dundee was visited by-a fire last
week that threatened the entire village, ,
Bert Gray of Tecumseh, received a
burro from the wild west last week for
his son. -
Lenawee County Medical Association
will hold a session at Devil's Lake
August 14.
Rumor has it that the Stimpson
Scale factory of Milan is to be moved
to Nouthville.
Freeman Carr of Ypsilanti, won a
purse of $300 on a 2:28 trot at the
Cadillac races,
Alexander Webster, who has been
porter of the Lewis hotel at Ypsilanii,
died last week.
The state won its suit against the
Michigan Central railroad for the payment of $4,000,000 back taxes.
The Mason's of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti with their families will picnic
at Whitmore Lake August 16.
O. E. Hawkins, former editor of the
Tecumseh News, has purchased a
newspaper at Mancelona, this state.
Mrs. J. Neumann of Detroit, wife of
a former pastor of the Ann Arbor
Bethlehem church, died in Ottawa,
Illinois, Friday. - s
Miss Anna Brownell of York, has a
hen that has lafd 169 eggs since November 15,1905. One day. last week
she laid two eggs.
A lady of Ann Arbor was awakened
by the thunder the other night in time
to discover a blaze in a nearby store
and turned in an alarm.
At the September .meeting of the
U. of M. Board of Regents, the question of the removal of the medical department will be decided.
Dr." and Mrs. W. H. Nichols of Boulder, Colorado, has presented the city
of Ann Arbor and the TJ. of M. with 32
acres of land to be used for park purposes.
The Michigan Bell Telephone Co.
are stringing two more copper circuit
wires between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, making six lines between the
two cities.
..Walter Robbins and wife of Augusta
township, have donated a piece of land
to the trustees of the Evangelical Association of North America, on which
to build a church.
Prof. Henry C. Adams of the Political Economy Department of the TJ. of
M., bas been granted a year's leave of
absence and will work in Washington
for the government.
Warden Armstrong of the Jackson
prison, has aroused the indignation of
the lawyers because they will not be
allowed to converse with prisoners in
regard to their cases.
A few days ago David Rowe of Grass
Lake, took from his cellar some 1905
Baldwin apples that were well preserved. He wrapped them first in
paper and placed them in a paper sack
and they have kept nicely.
A party of twenty-seven Normal students left Friday to view the famous
Mammoth Cave of Kentucky. They
will place on a cairn of stone which is
nearly four miles from the entrance, a
Normal pennant, given them by last
year's excursionists. .
The Normal college is said to be in
heed of a new building: with an auditorium on the first door and conservatory class rooms on the second. It is
suggested that the new building cost
about $215,000 and the auditorium accommodate about 2,500 persons. -
Mack & Co. and Martin Haller of
Ann Arbor, and M. W. Welch &T Co.
of Chicago, were given the contract of
supplying-the furniture of tho new
Ann Arbor high school building.
The Chicago firm has donated an
American flag 16x8 feet to adorn the
new building.
Mrs. D. C. McLaren and Mrs. H. S.
Holmes of Chelsea, while sitting at a
table in the 'Holmes \ cottage at-Cava-
naugh lake last week, had a narrow
escape from being shot. A young man
was cleaning a gun on tbe porch of an
adjoining cottage when it was discharged, the bullet passing within half
an inch of the women's heads.
A lady not far from Unadilla who
takes one of those uinpty ump ten cent
magazines from Maine saw an" ad
which reads: "How to make trousers
last-for S1.00." The lady wishing to
save something for the head of the
family inclosed a dollar and received
these instructions written in type*
