Landmark Burned.
.What has been_ commonly known as
the Junction House "was burned to the
ground Tuesday evening about six
o'clock. Just how the fire originated
seems to be unknown, but the supposition is that the blaze started among
some oil and waste on the lower floor.
The building was bought some four
years ago by the Pere Marquette railroad and used as an office huilding.
Of late, however, it was used as a
plate of storage. A gang of eight or
ten Italian section hands also occupied the upper- floors. One of them
had just started a fire in a stove to
cook supper when the fire broke out
and burned so rapidly that the Italians
lost nearly all their personal effects.
One of them stated he Tost $106 in
cash, another lost" $30.
The place was built some 35 years
ago and was used as a hotel and hoarding house. It's isolated situation, however, never made it a paying investment. It was worth probably $2,500.
The fire-department turned out at
the alarm but the building was too far
away from the nearest hydrant to
make it possible to render any effective work fighting the flames.—Plymouth Mail.
"Hard Shot."
In the sermon to the congregation of
the Methodist church Sunday morning,
Rev. M. C. Hawks, the pastor, said
that he had heard that Ypsilanti was a
conservative city, but he'found instead of a conservative -city, a city
whose people are too lazy to become
conservative, and a town full of people too dead to be buried. He ironically called upon thernto "go slower, go
slower, sleep, snore." He said that
some day they would sleep too long
and find that they missed their opportunity to render the city valuable aid.
Rev. Hawks has been in the city
only a short time, having moved there
from the Sdo.—Chelsea Tribune.

Swallowed A Needle.
Incessant crying of the infant son of
Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Covell, Jr.*-, as
though in distress, called for a thorough examination of the child's body
which revealed a sewing needle imbedded in the flesh of his left leg. Dr. G.
W. Richardson was called and extracted the same. It is thought the child
must have found the needle on the
floor, swallowed it and it was thus
working itself to the surface, point
first. It is -very fortunate that the results were not more serious.—Dundee
Reporter.

Two Banks Failed.
Because his funds got low as a result of the financial stringency and he
was unable to obtain suffieient currency, E. B. Lee today closed his two
private banks at Jasper and Weston.
In order to protect his depositors impartially he turned over to the receiver all of his property, 'including his
home and his life insurance. He says
that his total liabilities, including the
deposits in both banks, is not tp exceed $55,000 and his assets are Upwards of $82,000.—Manchester Enterprise.

A Real Wonderland.
South Dakota, with its "rich silver
mines, bonanza fa*Shs, wide ranges and
strange natural formations, is a veritable wonderland. At Mound City, in
the home of Mrs. E. D, Clapp, a wonderful case of healing has lately occurred. Her son seemed near-death
with lung and throat trouble. "Exhausting coughing spells oecurrecT'ev-

A Celebrated Celibate.
A young and handsojne rector was
recently engaged for a fashionable
church. One of the vestrymen with
a keen relish for a joke circulated tha
rumor that the new parson belonged
to "the order of celibates, thinking
thereby to baffle the spinsters and
widows" of the congregation who were
many. Ohe matron, with several mar-
riagable "daughters, assembled these
and a few young friends about her,
and gave the group a solenig warning,
"Now, girlg," she gaid.^tyftn must not
