' Self Possession Shown.
An incident last., night, during the
singing of the "Messiah" in high
school auditorium, .accredits, great
^self-possession and poise to Miss Elisabeth Campbell, one of the soloist* in
the oratorio. Just before Miss Campbell was to sing, a woman ih the front
of the audience fainted. There was
the usual commotion and even members of the chorus rose lo their feet
but Professor Howland, who was directing, never wavered in a beat, and
Miss Campbell, with scarcely an instant's hesitancy, arose and sang the
beautiful air, "Come unto Him, all ye'
that are weary and heavy laden and
he will givo you rest." - In the perfect
self-possession of the singer, the audience grew calm, and tne* beautiful
solo claimed the attention whicli'. was
its d.ue. The woman was overcome*
probably by lhe closeness of the room,
but in a few'minuses levived and* was,
able to remain throughout the.cou-
cert.—Times.
Auto On Runners.
The jingle of sloiga bells was . heard
all day Sunday Thu fall of snow Friday night and'Saturday forenoon made
the sleighin-.' passably good, and everybody witb a cutler or an excuse for
one improved Ibe opportunity Sanday
to take a sleigh ride. But the unusual
sight was the automobile on runners.
It cante from the west and by the time
it reached the middle of town had attracted quite a crowd. Word had
reached even the outskirts of town
that an automobile "on runners" was
in front of the Stimpson. Yes, it was
on runners,"but it"'ffquired a good
team of horses to pull the load.—Milan
Leader.

PUT TAX ON BACHELORS.
State
of • Argentine Republic Was
Harsh on Those Unwed. \
Although much Ijas been written in?
modern times "in earnest and in'-^un
on tlie taxation of bachelors, there are
not many corners of the earth where
such a system o£..ta*sation is*" introduced as Was done in the state of Cordoba, in the Argentine republic, at the
beginning of the twentieth century.
There every male who has passed his
twentieth - year is considered fit for
marriage, and" the state enjoins upon
him "the-duty, of finding a companion
for-life. If'he remains single till the
completion of.his thirtieth birthday,
he must pay for his freedom a tax of
five dollars a month. Then the tax in-'
creases $10 a" month at the age of 35,
and even to $30 a month frcm the age
of 35 to 50. From the age Gf GO the
tax gradually decreases. Widowers
have only three years given to enjoy
their liberty, after which they have
got to get another wife or pay the tax.
A Real Wonderland. !
South Dakota, with its rich, silver
mines, bonanza farms, wide "ranges and
strange natural formations, is a veritable wonderland. At Mound -City, in
the home'of Mrs. B. D. Clapp, a wonderful case of healing has 'lately, occurred. Her son" seemed near death
with lung and throat trouble. "Exhausting coughing spells occurred every" five minutes," writes TVIrs. Clapp,
"when I began giving Dr. .King's New
Discovery, the great medicine, that
saved his life and completely cured

evidently was about to forget. This is
