Unique Tourists.
Two interesting travelers were in
the city Monday being part of a -party
of four who are traveling across three
continents in tbe interest of science.
Adolph'Schneider and Prof. Alfredo
Batteili, who reached here .Sunday evening, were the guests of A. Pastorino
until Monday.
These"gentlemen are of a party of
four journalists who left New York
city October 7 last going to Pittsburg.
There they separated, two going south
and two northwest with, the, expectation that they.will meett in 'eleven
months at San Francisco. From there
the four'will go to Japan, Korea, sMan-
churia and Central China and then
through the A rabian desert, * Turkey
and Europe. They expect to he absent
four years and will study tbe political,
social and industrial conditions of the
several countries somparatively, make
scientific researches ' and observations
and compare tho customs of the countries, their inventions, the progress of
tbe mechanical arts and their effects

THE STANDARD
RER3EDY FCR ALL FORMS
Dried Apple Fruitcake.
Soak three cupfuls of dried apples
over night in ' cold water, enough to
swell them. Chop them in the morning tjuite fine and put them on the
fire with three cupfuls of New Orleans
molasses. Stew until nearly soft, add
one cupful seedless raisins and stew a
few minutes.- When cold add one cupful of .'butter, three eggs, three teaspoonfuls* of allspice, one grated nutmeg, one, teaspoonful of baking soda
aud three cupfuls of flour. Bake one
hour and a half in a moderate oven.
This makes a rich cake and will keep
for months.
