REV. CHESTER BIRCH, Evangelist
Last winter Special, meetings were
held by the pastors of- the Baptist,.
Methodist and Presbyterian churches.
There was a most cordial spirit of
union among them, and the results
were satisfactory and abiding. But
there was a great amount of religious
indifference remaining'and the problem of its removal was a serious and
difficult one. Three men, who had
the good bf Saline at heart, studied
that problem all through the summer
once a week, on their knees in prayer
to God. Those prayers have been answered. The attention of one of them
was directed to , Evangelist Chester
Birch as the- fitting man to lea"d ,a
campaign this fall. ■ Very warm commendations of his' personality and
Spirit and of Power. Each succeeding service seemed to gather new impetus during the first week. -
On Sunday, November 27, three
great* simultaneous- meetings were
held in the three churches in the afternoon—a woman's nieeting in the
Methodist ChurchTled by Mrs. C_ F.
Unterkircher; a children's meeting in
the Baptist Church, led by Miss Mae
Wheeler; and a men's meeting in the
Preshyterian Church. Regardless of
the stormy weather the meetings-"were
largely attended. The Spirit and
Power of God were in great evidence.
This was especially true of the men's
meeting. As splendid a company- of
men as ever gathered in Saline was
present. They came expecting some-

methods and preaching were received
from those with whom he had labored. He was engaged to begin meetings November 20. Those who have
heard him repeatedly during the two
weeks of his stay are agreed that the
words qf commendation were not overdrawn.
He is a remarkable all-around man,
not only as a preacher, but as a singer
and writer of sacred songs, and an expert cornet player and platform lecturer. When'he was converted he gave
up a fine position as a member of a
United States band in St. Louis and
refused promising opportunities in
order .to become an Evangelist. For-
more than twenty years, he has gone
over the continent with his Cornet and
Bible'and winning oratory, endeavoring to bring to people in the. churches
and outside, a1 clearer vision of Jesus
Christ as the Divine Saviour oi men.
There were misgivings whether, this
modern John the Baptist would be
able to break down the spirit of world-
liness and religious indifference whieh
had taken hold of so many both in
and out of our churches. But he
cam.e just as did the one of old, saying, "Repent, for the Kingdom of
Heaven is at hand." The preaching
has' not been with' words of man's
wisdom but in demonstration of the
the
the
the"
thing and their expectations were fully
realized.", The way the men sang wa"s
an inspiration. For an hour and a
quarter, Mr. Birch, with a heart full
of loye for men, gave to them a living,
burning message, bringing out vividly some of the great sins that are destroying the souls of men and at
same time be pointed them to
"Lamb of God who taketh away
sin of the world." At the close of this
great address an appeal was made to"
men who were already Christians for a
deeper consecration and also to all
who had- never begun the Christian
life. The response made to this appeal thrilled and electrified all who
were present as the men old and
young came "flocking to the front,
some for-a.deeper consecration, others
to begin the Christian life. The impression was one which will never .be
forgotten.
There is one s.ingular- fact that almost all who came forward at the first
opportunities given, were young men,
a splendid bunch of them.*
There has been no sensationalism
in.the preaching or methods of Mr.
Birch. The closest attention and interest have been manifest but no excitement. Everyone who has attended the meetings and especially ttie one
for men will admit his evident sincer-

has left behind as sweet impressions
or such beneficent influences.
For the benefit, of many- who have
not been able to come and see and
hear for themselves, as well as for
those who have been delighted by the
speaker's music aiid preaching we reproduce a picture of Evangelist Ghes?
ter Birch. He is a good specimen of
an athletic preacher who might strike
a telling blow with his fists. and who
giyes justas straight and fair blows
in his sermons. ' .
The religious awakening seems to
have only begun, but promises t6 be
deep and thorough and not to end
when the evangelist leaves. Mr.
Birch must close Friday night but
the union meetings will be continued
under "the leodership of the pastors
and it is hoped that the people will
rally with 'their presence and~ their
prayers as they did around the evangelist. It is a great opportunity that
should command the respect and
presence as far as possible of everyone who cares for the moral uplift of
Saline.
There is a demand for the continuance of the meetings for men Sunday *
afternoons. It is hoped that Willet .
S. Colgrove of Kalamazoo, oner of the
hoys of Saline, will be the speaker in
the Methodist Church next Sunday at
2:30 p.m. He tells a thrilling 3tory
of Ms own fescue from sin, by faith
in,Jesus-Christ, and of the rescue of
others. Every man in town should
hear him.
The evening meetings will be con-
thiued in the Methodist Church next
week at 7:00 p. m. -
Much of the "success of the meetings
is due tcJ the good work of the choir
and the pianists under, the efficient
leadership of Mr. P, H. Rouse and to
the orchestra wb_o played at the men's
meeting. ' .
