Resolutions Adopted by
The State Association of
Mutual Insurance Companies of Michlgaii
Lansing, Mich., Feb. 15, 1905.
Whereas, Prof. West Dodd of Des Moines, Iowa, has so scientifically and satisfactorily demonstrated to this convention the process by which nature produces lightning and the true methods of
guarding against it, thereby Saving a large percent of insurance
losses and much life.
Therefore be it Eesol red, That it is the sense of this convention,,
that the good offices of the companies here represented be tendered to Prof. Dodd in his good work of educating the people of Michigan in the true method of saving life and property from destruction by lightning, and, that the system of Dodd A Struthers is hereby recommended to all patrons of Mutual Insurance, in Michigan
as the correct>ystsm,of protecting buildings from lightning.
° Be it Further Kesolved,. The thanks and* appreciation of this
convention is hereby extended, to Prof Dodd for his instructive and
generous lecture, and that these resolutions be. printed in the report of this convention, and a copy of this resolution be presented
to Prof. Dodd.

The large ice houses at Whitmore
Lake have all been 'fillled to the roofs
and about four hundred car loads of
ice from the same lake shipped to Toledo.
The long held-up franchise*- of the
Toledo-Ann Arbor electric road into*-
Ann Arbor was finally passed by the
city council Monday, night after many
amendments had been added to it
There is no question of doubt as to
who will be Washtenaw's next circuit
judge. Hon. E. D. Kinne, who has
held that position for the past eighteen
years found no opposition 4n a re-nomination and at the spring election will
doubtless carry the couuty by a large
vote.
There was but one or two democrats
in Sylvan who turned put last Saturday
in response to the call issued for a
democratic caucus to nominate delegates to attend the county convention
—Chelsea Standard. They are probably preparing for a flanking movement. ' „
Ypsilanti is considering the proposition of purchasing the Abbot voting
machine which they claim cheapens
the election and gives no trouble at
such times, but the only advantage
apparent is that the result may
be .declared sooner. Saline tried
it and found that ag many men were,
required to carry on the election and
about the middle of the forenoon the
thing gave out and the voters were
compelled to resort to ballots. \

Fireproof.
In the fire which swept over this
city a few nights ago the Davis build-,
iug, constructed of the two-piece hollow wall system of the American Hydraulic Stone Co., Denver, Colo., was
severely exposed to fire and water, but
stood an impregnable barrier to the
progress of the flames. There was a
solid sheet of flames beating against
the cement blocks composing, the walls
of the building, and then there would
be a copious application,of cold water
from the nozzle. The blocks stood
these extremes- of temperatures jwith-
out any noticeable splitting or- chipping of the blocks.
The result is a surprise to many;
several of the special agents of the in
surance companies involved in this fire
made a very close inspection of the
Davis building in order that they
might be able to make an intelligent
report to their-companies, and one of
them, a representative: of a London
company, said that no ordinary brick
wall would have withstood the alternate exposure to heat and cold that
these cement blocks did, and another
said that on ordinary, constructed cement block buildings insurance com
panics would be warranted in materially reducing the cost ofjtnsurance.
The limestone trimming; on the Coon
block and the boulders in the/foundation were badly split and broken by
the heat and water, while the cement
blocks were not similarly ^ a$Eected.
The inside of the west hall Of the
Davis, building was not in the least
discolored by the heat, and at .no time
was it so hot that one could not hold
his hand against it. The si.eitg.i, of
the wall is obvious from the fact thai
the three-story brick wall of the. Coon
building fell, crushing against it without injurious effect.—Estherville (Iowa)
