The country roads around Nbrth-
ville are in a very bad condition, - the
"going" being" neither sleighing nor-
wheeling, but a combination ^pf snow
banks and bare ground which in places
is almost impassable.—Free Press;
The removal of the burnt walls of
the High School building of Ann Ar-
bor-and piling the brick on the campus
has been'let to John Wisner and the
contract for the erection of the new

tom, at a cost of about $200,000.
A boy who 3'l years ago "beat his
way" Into the county fair is now a
man and his conscience troubled him,
so he wrote a letter to D. B. Sutton,
treasurer of the Washtenaw county
fair association, inclosing 25 cents to
pay the debt. He did not sign his
name nor pay interest.—Ex.
The other day a couple of little girls
came to one of our prominent physician's office to be vaccinated. One of
them undertook tg^rjpeak for the other
and explained: "Doctor, this is my
sister. She Is too young to know her
left arm from her right, so mamma
washed both of them.—Hillsdale Leader.
A man who claimed to be an electrician applied at the home of W. H.
Slauson for board and lodging Thursday, and when leaving the house at
noon gave ihe landlady 50 cents with
which to pay for his trunk when it
arrived. Later it was discovered tbat
a pocketbook containing §18 had disappeared from the room adjoining the
one given the man and as he has not
returned the police are looking for
him.—Ypsilanti cor. Times.
Mrs. John Heenan of Hillsdale, was
a grandmother at 31, and now at 5S is
a great grandmother. That's great.
A picture should be taken of the four
generations, and as the great granddaughter reaches the age of her fore
mothers the fifth generation is an easy
possibility with Mrs. Heenan only 75.
The great granddaughtei'Tnay be older
than her, grand aunt. Who knows?
In Hillsdale county everything is possible, except it democratic victory*—

Oscar Gaudett, a woodman in the
camps at Norway has had an artificial
hone put in his arm and it is expected
that he will have the use of it when
the muscles form about it.—Ex.
Upper peninsula woodsmen give the
following as signs that there will be
an early spring: Swelling buds in the
hardwood trees; cliugins of' bark to*
the trees; sap springing in birches,
and needles loosening on pines..—Ex.
. Mrs. Hannah Marlatte, one of the
oldest residents of Oakland county,
has just celebrated her ninety-first
birthday by a family gathering, herself superintending, preparing aud
serving a banquet. Two families were
present, .each of which represented
four generations.—Free Press. ' .
It is reported that the Finns" residing in.the northern peninsula are in
receipt of appeals for help from friends
and relatives in Finland. Letters to
local Finns say that since the war
started tlie country is niore or less
neglected and tbe people are worse off
than at any time for some years before
hostilities began. Jn many regions
manufacturing has been neglected and
business in general has suffered. The
appeal for aid comes direct from, the
people and through the Finnish newspapers df this country and Finland.
Michigan Finns are freely responding
to the call for aid and it' is expected
that a large amount of money will be
poured into the mother country.
A Slight Mistake.
A certain young gentleman of the
village, so the story goes, was calling
upon his lady love on Sunday after-
uoon. A knotty Bible questiou was
engaging their attention and, after repeated unsuccessful attempts to find
the answer, the young lady suggested
'phoning the minister. So the young
man called up-central in this wise:
"Hello, central!' Has Rev. So-and-So
a.'ph.one?" .and;the answer came.back:
"No, but we ean give you , the justice
of the..\f)eacef* will- he do?"-rJjake
