Two Contests livened Proceedings "for
the Day in Saline.
Quite a large vote was cast ia Saline on election day. The contest between Fuoss and Wheeler for clerk
was an interesting" one. Last year-
Wheeler beat Fuoss by 8, and this
year the latter turned the tables, winning out by a majority oi 4.
The super.visorship^ appears as
though there had been a landslide for
Mr. Gross. The fact that Mr. Lutz
is a receptive candidate-for the post-
mastership had much to. do with jthe
large majority given his opponent,
without reflecting at all on the popularity of the latter.
This is the way Saline voted:

Michigan Children to do Oral Language
Work in the Schools.
■ The art of story-telling is to be revived according to the plans of Superintendent of Public Instruction Luther L. Wright as evidenced by the
State Course off* Study and the oral
language bulletin which has just been
issued by the department.'.. Superintendent Wright believes-that children
learn to speak correctly by speaking
rather than by, writing essays and
studying technical grammar. As a
result, the Course of Study requires
oral language work in the first six
grades.
Tbe'language work for the lower
grades will be largely the oral reproduction of stories which have been
told or read by the teacher. Stories
are to be dramatized, the children
making up the necessary dialogue,
thus developing- originality, fluency
of speech ind proper sentence construction,'as errors will be pointed
out and corrected.' For the more advanced grades; the -children, "will be
expected to compose and tell original
stone's, descriptions and arguments.
The purpose of the oral language
work is to develop habits of correct
speech, .stimulate original thinking,
encourage self-expression and fluency
of speech. . ,
