CONTEST CLOSES JULY 17.
BUT FEW DAYS REMAIN IN WHICH TO WORK FOR
THIS BEAUTIFUL PIANO; GET THEE BUSY TODAY; TOMORROW MAY BE TOO LATE.
Girls, you are in the last lap of the
race to represent Saline and vicinity
in the popular voting contest.
The. contest closes July. 17. After
that date, it will be too late. You
have golden days during which opportunity knocks at the door, clamoring
for admittance. It is up to you.
Have you seen a track meet? The
man ahead has set a hot pace; too
hot, perhaps, for his own good. The
trailer is coming into his own on that
last lap. It is a magnificent exhibition of gameness the man behind
gives as he comes from the rear with
pounding feet and breath. At the
very tape he snatches victory. It is
inspiring. You yell-, you scream with
delight at the bull dog courage of the
winner. It is the victory of higher
manhood—the victory of courage and
perseverance.
Today many girls may be leading
in the number of* votes they have.
Do not be discouraged, That is ih
your favor. The girl may nap on
her honors. Remember the hare and
the tortoise. The hare is never so far
ahead that he cannot be overtaken if
he slows up, and the one behind hits
up the pace, as they say oh the cinder
path.
Think of the man in the long race
on the track. This is your chance to
spurt. These days ahead of you give
you plenty of time to change the
whole appearance of the race,. Between
now and the closing day of the contest, July 17, there may be such an
upheaval in the standing of the girls
that today's leader may be down in
the list by that time. They have
shown splen'did work in the past and
this is their warning.. And if they are
wise it will be. Over-confidence has
beaten more athletes than you can
number. Over-confidence may beat
the leaders of today. 'This is your opportunity you who are behind. Grasp
it quick!
The Observer has pointed out the
advantages of this voting contest so
often that it will not reiterate the wonderful possibilities to the girls who
undertake the race. It is an opportunity that offers itself to hut few in a
lifetime. If you have one chance in a
million (and what girl has not) it is
your duty to seize it at once.
So to the girl behind, we would say:
Get busy! Work! Work!
To the girl in front: Do not go to
sleep on your honors. Remember the
race is not on until you breast the
tape. There is plenty of time between
today and July 17 to change the whole
complexion of the race. The chance
is with you to grasp it.

THE IDEAL FIRELESS- COOKERS
Propagating a Tree,
The tree which occasionally gets Itself propagated In the most Interesting way Is the elder. "W. H. Hudson In
his book, "Afoot in England," has a delightful passage giving the life story
of some elders he noticed growing on
a Wiltshire down. There was a small
group of them set among some rabbit
burrows and a local farmer told him
how they came there.
First, the rabbits, finding that the
hill had softer chalk at that spot, had
made burrows. Then some wheatear3
came and nested In and lived about
the burrows. The wheatears fed on
the berries of an elder growing higher up on the down and so brought the
seeds to the burrows, where they routed in the soft ground and soon established a flourishing thicket

Escaped With His Life.
"Twenty-one years ago I faced an
awful death," writes H. B. Martin,
Port Harrelson, S. C. "Doctors said
I had consumption and the dreadful
cough I had looked like it, sure
enough. I tried everything I could
hear of, lor my cough, and was under
the treatment of the best doctor in
Georgetown, S. C.*, for a year, but
could get no relief. A friend advised
me to try Dr. King's New Discovery.
I did so, and was completely cured. I
