Jackson and Battle Creek men claim
to have struck a rich vein, of coal nea*r
Albion. The coals ol Michigan are,
for the most part, of a lower grade
than those coming from Ohio and
Pennsylvania, with which they have
to compete, but the rapid development-and increase of population in
the cities along Lakes Michigan and
Huron and on Detroit and St. Clair
rivers have created local markets for
these coals, and the increase in production in this field during .the last
ten years has been unrivaled in the
coal-mining industry of the United
States. All the Michigan coals are of
the dry, non-coking bituminous variety,- The coke manufactured in the
state is made fromcoal brought from
Ohio or Pennsylvania.—Enterprise.
While an effort is being made to
free Frank Glazier of Chelsea from
prison, people whom he is alleged to
have caused to give their notes for
stock, in his stove company so they
could vote on his schoolhouse proposition, and he promised that the
notes would be given back after election, are hustling to settle with the
receiver of the bank, as the notes were
turned in by Glazier.—Enterprise.
What Swatters 'Fatea?
A female house fly which- has hibernated In a dwelling- house, or elsewhere, writes Prof. F. 1.. Washburn
in the Popular Science Monthly; may
produce in the spring, at the lowest
estimate, 120 eggs. Assuming that
one-half of these hatch as females,
and allowing that the breeding goes
on without check for four months, w«
have as the descendants of a single
hibernating individual 214,657,844,320,-
000,000,000,000 flies. Now, a house fly
measures exactly one-fourth of an
inch in length; the distance . around
the earth at the equator is said "to he
24,800 miles. It would take, therefore,
3,GS8,312,000 flies placed end to end to
go around the world once. Using this
number as a denominator, and' tho
number of flies produced In four
months from one mother as a numerator, we find she will give^rise, in the
course of a summer, to enough flies to
encircle the globe at the equator
5,000 times, and have plenty ol
progeny to spare!
Is The World Growing Better?
Many things go to prove that it is.
The way thousands are trying to help
others is proof. Among them is Mrs.
W. W. Gould," of Pittsfield, N. H.
Finding good health by taking Electric Bitters, she now advises other
sufferers, everywhere," to take them.
' For years 1 suffered with stomach
and .kidney trouble," she writes.
"Every medicine I used failed till I
took Electric Bitters. But this great
remedy helped me wonderfully."
They'll help any woman, They're the
best tonic and finest liver and kidney
remedy that's made. Try them.
You'll see. 50c at O. C. Wheeler's
