Theatrical Announcement of the Season
is "A Daughter of the Gods."
The most extraordinary theatrical
announcement of the entire season
is that William Fox's million dollar
motion picture, "A Daughter of the
Gods," featuring Annette Kellermann,
will be presented at the Whitney-
theatre, Ann. Arbor for four days,
commencing Sunday night, January
14. The picture will be shown, twice
daily, at 2:15 and 8:15 p. m. This
wonderful production has created the
biggest furore in the whole history of
motion pictures. It was first shown
to the public at the Lyriq Theatre,
N&w York, early in October,-and immediately became the talis of the
metropolis. This great picture is still
running there, and has proved to be
the greatest success New York has
had in a score of years. After the
picture won success in New York, Mr.
Fox put it on in all of the big cities;
and it is now repeating its New York
triumph in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington
and St. Louis. The picture has scored
so heavily that it will undoubtedly
run two years in New York, and a
full year in the other cities. "A
Daughter of the Gods'" was filmed on
an island in the Carribean Sea, which
was leased from the British government for that purpose, the actual cost
of making the picture was $1,000,000',
the total number of persons appear-
in s* in the production, 22,000, and the
largest number in a single scene,
19,000. Mr. Fox caused an entire city
to be built, and then had it destroyed
by fire. Annette Kellermann, known
as the "most perfectly formed woman
in the world," performs the most daring feats of her eventful career", in
the various scenes. Miss Kellermann
is the champion swimmer and diver
of the world and she more than lives
up to.her reputation in this film. It
required eleven months of ceaseless
work for the whole company to make
the picture.
A delightful musical score, composed by Robert Hood Bowers, will
be interpreted by an augmented symphony orchestra of thirty master musicians.

Popular Young Couple Wed.
One of the first weddings of the
New Year took place on Thursday,
January 4, at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Luther Richardson, 404 South
State street, when their daughter,
Grace Elizabeth, was united in marriage to Prof. Arthur Metcalf, superintendent of schools at Saline, Mich.
Miss Helen Martin of Boyne City
sang "At Dawning" hy Cadman, after
which a simple ring ceremony was
read by Rev. F. O. Scurrah, pastor of
Westminster church.
The parlor was decorated with
palms and narcissus and the bride
was charmingly dressed in hunter's
green and wore a corsage bouquet of
violets. The mother of the bride
wore a wisteria silk gown.
After the ceremony a three course
dinner was served in the dining room
which was in keeping with the decorations of pink sweet peas.
Mr. Metcalf stands well in his
chosen vocation and is studying to
get his Ph. D. at Columbia university. His bride will be missed here
as she has" been a favorite in social
and musical circles. They left on
the afternoon train for their new
home well showered with rice.—Big
Rapids PioneerrHerald.
Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf arrived home
on Saturday and have been receiving
the congratulations of their many
friends.

i
there Gomes a time, about twice a 1

the upkeep of the various institutions,
state, township and village.
But when one contemplates all one
gets for our modest stipends, even
though the sta te may he run rather
recklessly as to expenses; the feeling

Deposits Jn Saline's Banking Institutions
Show 1916 War Prosperous Year.
In this issue appears the statements of the financial condition of
Saline's prosperous banks. If you
had saved the statements that were
printed about a year ago and, had
them for comparison with the ones
in this week's, paper, you would discern, that during the past twelve
months deposits have increased more
than $125,000, which, we take it, is a
sizeable increase .for a community the
size of Saline.
Some of our readers may wonder
why we print so many good items
concerning banks and bankers during the year, when they seem to be
doing so well. Well, "there's a reason." While this community is especially fortunate in the rank and file
of its thrifty citizens, there's always
a chance for improvement. We "are
still very far behind the European
countries when it comes to per capita
bank deposits, and there is no other
one thing so beneficial for the rising
generation than object lessons in
thrift. While we are no advocate of
penuriousness, it is useless to deny
that if all who should had substantial
hank accounts they would be freer
from worry and much more useful
citizens. The habit of saving, even if
not much, is a worthy one and should
be adopted by all classes, rich and
poor, old and young, male and female.
Changes in Old Firm.

do the bookkeeping for the new firm
and will be succeeded in the sales
work by Mr. Brackel, who has had
