SAVE THE BOADS
The time of year is rapidly approaching *when, "due to the frost
leaving- tbe ground, the roads of the
oounitry get in softened condition
and are injured very quickly by
heavy toads passing over them. This
applies equally well. to the, pavements maintained by the State,
gravel roads maintained by the Ccftin-
t*y and Tbwnshiji, roads.. The latter
being largely diirt with some gravel-
surface.
Tihere is a -^tafce law, revised in
1S27, which, fixes the, maximum allowable! load 'between March first
and June first, and makes the vibla-
'tion of this law punibhiable by heavy
fine. Usually this law is not* enforced except during and preceding the
break-up .oif the roads.
The County Road Commissioner
wauld be glad! if tliosei people in the
country -wro opperate heavy trucks
and,. those 'who haiul baled hay and
lamother grouip who get out logs,
would, give consideration to this
question and do as much of this
hauling as possible before ithe frost
leaves the ground. It is only a question of ai few days bia'ore a warm,
sjpell, will come when the roads will"
become too soft to carry \up such
■loads- At the presepnt time there
is appriojinuait'ely 18 ifnehes of f,rost
im the grounld' and the indications
are that conditions wAU be much "better this spring than during the past
trn*o years, however, this will also
depend on how quilckly the frost
c-mes out of the ground. At the
present time the iCo|un,ty Road Commissioner does not 'have- -men on; the
road checking truck overloading, but
as soon as the first! indBlqation .of a-
break-up comes, men, will be om the
jcb and the loading enforcements will
be carried out. Anyone -who is inter-
eistedi i<n finding out what he
should; carry on has truck, to be within the law*, can. get the information
by calling ar telephbTiing -the Wash-
ten anv County Roaid Commission.
A vei*y ipleasant gathering was held
at the home of Mr. audi Mrs- A
Dwight Crittenden om East Michigan
aviemue on Wednaday afternoon,
March 7, the' occasion being the fiftieth anniversairy of theio* marriage.
Only two -who attended the- wedding-
in 1878 were able to be present,
Mrs. Ida Davis ofi Ypsilanti and Miss
Luicy Cobb of this place. Other
guests present were the children and
grandchildren: Mir. and Mrs. Reuben
Toogood and .dlaughter of Grand Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. George Crittenden
and family of Ypsilanti and Mr.
and Mrs. Calvin Wolf and family of
Ann Arbor. EfcLgene. Crittenden and
familiy of Syracmse, New Yonk, beting unable to attend, extended their
greetings,- by a telephone, message.
A sumptuous dinner was served
Which w!as much enjoyed by all.
Numerous beautiful gifts of gold,
