PROF. METCALF CONDUCTS SALINE LOSES ONE TO
AN INDUSTRIAL, SURVEY "* THE FAST MILAN TEAM
Former Superintendent of Saline Game Marked By Fast Playing on
School Engaged in Very
Important. Work. - - . •
Ypsilanti, July 4.—Arthur A. Metcalf, associate professor of education
at the normal college, is conducting
an industrial survey to discover a
method by means of whioh the modern high school and the industrial
schools may be "brought into closer
relationship. The results of this survey, when completed, is to be published in booklet form for the benefit of the boys and girls in the smaller high schools of the state.
"Many of those who graduate
from high school go on to college because they don't know what elca to
do," Profr Metcalf says. "Many of
these are not fitted for college work,
and would be glad to go into industrial pursuits, but dislike to start as
common laborers."
After investigating conditions in
manufacturing plants Prof. Metcalf
will take up the problem with business concerns such as large wholesalers and retailers of various lines
of goods.
"I find these people are constantly-
looking for boys and girls with high
school training," Mr. Metcalf continued, "and are willing to put them
into apprenticeship for a time in the
hopes of making them into highly
skilled workers or executives."
Among the cities .where the survey has been conducted are Detroit,
Flint, Grand Rapids and Jackson.
The results will be published next
fall.
Prof. Metcalf is also at work on a
booklet on "How to Conduct Vocational TranCig in Small High Schools
of Michigan. He began his work in
this field while in public school work,
and is said to have been the first instructor to introduce a course in
"Occupational Information" into a
small high school.
He began his personal counsel
work while superintendent of schools
in Boyne City, and devised and published a self-analysis chart which is
now widely used in "the schools of the
state. He has frequently been called to various parts of Michigan to
speak before high schools and other
groups on the subject of vocational
guidance, and last spring was invited
by the Michigan Schoolmasters' club
to conduct a survey of vocational
courses in Michigan high schools.—

Saline took the short end of a well-
played game Sunday. The morning
fain left the field in bad shape for
fast baseball, but both teams played
like; major league material, but two
errors being made by each side,.and
and each pulled a double play.
Smith for the vistors let Saline
down with three hits and while Hoef t
was nicked for ten the most of them
were lucky dumps that would have
been outs on a good field.
