SALINE LOSES TO CLINTON
Saline lost to Clinton last Wednesday evening, 34-14, in .the .poorest
exhibition the locals have displayed
in the past two seasons.
The game was marked by extremely rough play, 21 personal fouls
being called and three jnen* ejectea
from the contest. Carr was removec*
with four personal fouls, while Kalder and B. Tate left the game at the
request of the official.
The local team had .a very poor
offensive, and even when the ball
was worked in close to the basket
many shots were missac", -'.while on
the other hand Clinton made every
shot good. Short fast passes baffled
the home team and gave the visitors,
an. easy victory.
Anglemeyer and Flemming led the
Clinton outfit, with 9 .and 7 points,
respectively.
In the preliminary game rthe Reserves defeated the Orange and
Black, 16-7.
Neither team had a very .good de-.
fense, but the scoring was low because, neither had anyone who could
put the ball through the hoop, with
the exception of Girbach, who had
five baskets. * t

On October 18, 1866, the Board of
Supervisors of Washtenaw county,
at their annual session, adopted tha
following resolution:
Resolved: Tnat the territory
known as the northeast quarter, and
the north half of the southeast quarter, and all of that part of the northwest quarter, lying east of the Saline
river, of section one in the Township
of Saline, Washtenaw County. and
State of Michigan be, and-the sams
is hereby declared an incorporated
village by the name of the Village o.
Salihe. And that Jortin Forbes,
Charles M. Wallace and E. B. Clark,
be, and are appointed inspectors of
an election to be held at the American hotel in the Village of Saline, on
Tuesday, the 27th day of November,
A, D. 1866.
At a special election, held at the
Saline Exchange, in the Village oi
Saline, on Monday, December -10,
1866, for the purpose of electing officers for said Village bf 'Saline, the
following were elected:
Prsldent—Charles H. Wallace.
Trustees—George Sherman, William Rheinfrank, James F. Draper,
Henry J, Miller, Samuel D. VanDuzer, James F. Seeley.
Clerk—George W. Hall.
Marshal—Jortin Forbes.
Street Commissioner—Jortin Forbes.
Assessor-—Myron Webb.
Treasurer—W. H. Davenport.
A list of ordinances followed the
election which were carefully worded, and demanded that all matters oi
village government be observed. Ordinance No. 5, was in reference to
fines, and instructed the marshal that
in May and November of each year,
and oftener if necessary, to enter
into every house or building, yard
or premises in the village and examine the fire places, chimneys, stove
and pipes and all other apparatus
liable to cause fires; also places
where hay, straw, shavings or other
combustible matter mights be lodged,
and to see that every place be made
and kept free from -fine liability. A
penalty followed that for defective
chimneys, stove pipes through ceilings without proper protection, etc.,
a fine of $3 to be charged, and §1 for
every 24 hours any chimney or stove
pipe shall remain so after notice was
gven to repair same.
There were various ordinances
dealing with cattle, hogs, poultry,
etc., running at large on streets,
whicli were very strict, and the village pound was a busy place much orl
the time and the poundmaster usually gathered in quite a little change
as a result.
The first round of competition in
the Saline Bowling League was played off last week and ended with Tanner's Grocery and Haarer's "Market

By order of its board of directors,
the Bridgewater Savings Bank closed its doors to business Monday
morning, to protect its depositors.
Bank examiners are already at work
on the reports to be sent to the State
Banking Department.
The present state of economic up-
heavel prevalent throughout the entire country can bear 'the blame for
the closing of the bank According
to all reports, there has been no
heavy run on the institution, but a
steady drain on deposits that lowered funds on hand to a point from
which they could not. properly be replenished from lack of funds which
were tied up in so-called frozen assets. Under ordinary conditions thi&
position would never have been
reached, but what with the "freezing
up" of bonds that no one everi: suspected of being anything but the
very safest, such bank failures are
happening every day and undoubtedly will continue to happen -until economic conditions are restored to normal.
The people of Bridgewater suffered a. shock at the closing of the banfc,
and business fell off to a certain extent which is always the case when
the only financial institution of the
community closes its doors, and wiU
feel the loss for some time. Business,
after such a calamity has «. way of
soon coming back to normal with
surprising rapidity. This, no doubt,
will Throve true in such an Industrious
community as Bridgewater even
more swiftly than in other places
that have suddenly found" themselves
in a similar predicament.
