Saline schools met some time ago,
-committees 'were announced, and a
week ;later, when "materials had been
-gdt'ten from rsta7te "headquarters, the
program committee met and formulated plans for a year's programs.
It was decided to break up the responsibility o'f the program into two
parts, the instructional end the entertaining, emphasizing the^ one to
bring people to the meetings for the
-'purpose o'f "hearing* the other. Tt
was decided' 'to "start early in*.-the

'get the very best people possible. In
this connection, Dr. Edgar T. Johnson, principal of the University high
school, will speak "Monday evening,
October 23, on the subject. "The
Present "Emergency in "Education."
We, who have good chances of having
'our schools open all the year, fail to
recognize the conditions in other
parts o'f tha state. We 'are standing
at the parting of the ways, where
we shall "have to initiate an entirely
new system of taxation, perhaps, and
Dr. Johnson will endeavor to show
what this change may mean.
The speaker is very conversant
with his subject, he is an earnest and
convincing reasoner, "he knows 'the
schools of the state and the schools
of other states as well. You cannot

Of course, you Tknow the result of
TFriday's game. If you had planned
to go and didn't you're probahly glad,
thinking you didn't miss much.
Well, Tm here to tell you that it was
a real game. Never will you see one
like it. Milan hammered our line
and played our ends, going through
'for several touchdowns, but in the
last quarter our boys tightened like
a clam and all the Bruckners and
"Bassets in the 'country couldn't have
gotten through. Then we got the old
pigskin and didn't we go-to" town9
"One 'first down after another for our
first touchdown. That proves our
boys have the stuff. They gained
knowledge and confidence in the
Milan game. Today we are going
to Dundee and give them .the sur-
".pfise of their "lives. You're going
with us" and give support to that
fighting team.
A secret! You like 'em, too?
"Well, "here's a good one. Have yo:l
ever heard of a .?1 bill with a star ?
As I undrstand it, when old1 money
is called in and a new bill is printed
with" the same serial number, a star
is printed "before the 'number.' "Nevertheless a young man entered one
of our local stores with such a bill,
a purchase to make. A bit of kidding persuaded the young - (lady)
clerk that such a bill is worth 535
at the World's Fair. The young gen-
'tleman left with a dollar and a half.
Would you believe it?
Please don't mention this to Mrs.
Hilda Probyn.
I understand George CamTburn is
sleeping in the back yard nights.

And. what's it to be without a shekle,
What's a cent or two?
Why just plug along and smile,
They say it's great for you.
Just to be without a home,
A friend or dear one to love,
It's minor in: this life of ours,
We should smile and give a shove.
This "preacher" without a sorrow,
I'd like'to see his mate, ,j:
'Cause we're together in: this world
Ajnd will plug along to fate.
These laughin', smi'lin' sissies,-
They get beneath your hide,
And in the end, dear brother,
They'll be on the downward ride.
Just cheer up, smile and laugh,
It's easy, so they say,
But in the end, laugh or cry,
We'll all have "hell" to pay.
