SERVICE
In the Spring, we find* many things around! the home or farm
which need a coat of paint or varnish, to preserve the material and
improve the looks. Bu!t paints and varnishes have gone so high in
cost that many put off the painting. We can help you out this spring
and save you the biggest .part oi your waint and' yarnish bill.
We have a quantity of Paints, Varnish-Stains, Enamels, Etc., in
cans which have become shopworn, and which we do not wish to
continue on out shelves with fresh goods. These are good standard
brands, the assortments fairly complete in the varnishes, not quite as
complete in the paints, but if you have a piece of furniture to reftn-
ish, porch furniture to fix up, a floor to varnish, a piece ofTmachim'-
ery-.or a small building to repaint, these goods will do the work at
less than half present costs.
Come in and look over our paint and varnish bargain counter,
you will he surprised at the values we offer.

"The women of our state and nation have their part to play in the
winning of the war, and right nobly
iha.ve they responded to all the calls
that have been made upon them.
They held a wonderful conference
recently in Lansing in preparation
for their coming registration for service. Hundred's of women from all,
over the state were in attendance and
the interest and enthusiasm manifested must have been a revelation
to the promoters of the conferenee-
"Taking lesson from the experience
of our allies in the war, the federal
government and the Michigan "War
Preparedness board! have given their
endorsement and assistance to the
registration of women for war service, to be taken by the Woman's

SETTLE QUESTION
OE YIVA-SECTION
PRIVATE FUNDS PROVIDED FOR
RESEARCH' WORK
Many Saline People, Objecting to
Viva-section^ Will Now Help .
the Red Cross
The question of "viva-section vs.
anti-viva-section" in connection with
Red Cross medical research work in
France, which has been the cause of
much discussion during the past
winter, has been settled. Funds for
this research will be supplied by
private parties.
As several Saline people have been
among those who objected to viva-
section, the fact that the question is
settled ds of interest here. Harvey D.
Gibson, general manager of the American Red Cross, in a recent announcement says in part:
"The Red Cross did not appropriate
this money for abstract medical research and expemrmentation. It was
%> be used for the/direct and immet-
diate purpose of finding ways to prevent or cure wounds of American
soldiers. In deference, however, to
the sincere convictions against the
use of animals for research' work
which has b,een expressed by earnest
Red Cross workers, we recognize our
onligation to them;
"Realizing the situation an individual has come forward and has offered to supply the funds necessary
for' the work so that none shall be
taken from the general, funds of the
Red Cross. This fund will also provide for the 'reimbursement of the
Red Cross for any expenditures ifi
connection therewith in the past.
The war council has decided to'accept this offer without in any way
taking a position either for or
against the question in controversy,
but because they do not wish their
acts to be considered to be in conflict
with the sincere convictions' of Red
Cross members."
