Planning and
Rezoning
Commission
The City Council wrote a letter
to the School Board and asked
that someone from the School
Board sit in on the planning and
rezoning commission's meeting.
Leo Jensen, superintendent of
S'aline area schools, was selected,
and has been attending the meeting regularly since his appointment.
A very brief sketch of the rezoning of the city was submitted
to the council for study. The commission realized there will be many
disagreements. They also realize
there will be a great deai of study
and changing of their sketch, but
it's a start.
Saline City Councilmen Discus
Possibilites of Water Softener
Plant and New City Hall
The possibilities of handling the
building of a new city hall and
water softener plant for the City
of Saline, at the cost of approximately $10.00 per year for the*
period of ten years by voting on
extra mills, was discussed at Monday night's Council meeting.
The city hall has long been
needed, in view of the present
meeting place. The old one .is
crowded for the meetings. The Police Dept., Court, City Office and
the Council meeting place are all
crowded into one small room.
The stairway leading to the city
offices are made of wood and are
very old. The fire hall is directly
below the council hall and their
meetings are held at the same time
as the council meeting.
Mrs. Edward Straletzkie of Lima,

The Saline High School Concert
Band, Arthur Katterjohn, conductor, will be presenting its first concert of the year on Wednesday evening, December 11th, and will have
as its guest conductor, Dr. George
C. Wilson, Vice President of 'the
National Music Camp at Interlocked Dr. Wilson will conduct the
band in two numbers - Mannin Veen by Haydn Wood, and the "Band
of America March" by Paul Laval-
le. Dr. Wilson was. Director of
bands at the University of Missouri
and Arizona before accepting the
post at InterlocMen. He now re-

be the outstanding first chair clarinetist, Miss Joan Austin, who will
be the clarinet soloist on the familiar p*/eee-"Nola"-and will be playing (.thg-_ Bass Clarinet, the Bb So-

Eb "•Cikrinet. In addition to these
outstanding features, the Saline
Band, CJ.bn.cert will feature the
Tfomb*bhe, Baritone and Bass sections in a rousing march-'Them
Basses." A South American number entitled "Lilt, of the Latin" will
feature the many rhythm instruments of the percussion section.
The Junior High Intermediate
Band, under the direction of Mr.
Russ Reed the new band instructor
in the Saline Area School System
this year, will play two numbers,
"Atlantic Skies Overture", and "Appalachian Suite." Following this
band, the Junior High Concert Band
will perform the "Fantasy for
Band" which was last year's re-
o-ired contest niece for Sr. High
.Bands in Class C; "Man Overture"
which was chosen two years ago as
the Saline Hi Band's selected con-
s test piece, and which really challenges any band; and the toe-tapping march-"Americans We."
The Senior High Concert Band
dpens its concert with "Procession
of Nobles"-a very difficult and
challenging piece which should
start the concert out right. A Bach
"Prelude and Fugue" and the "An-
acreon" overture com- next in the
program, to be followed by "Mannin Veen" and "Band of America
March"-conducted by the guest
conductor, Dr. Charles Wilson.
After intermission, the High
School Band plays "American Folk
Rhaposbdy," which is a collection
of old familiar folk tunes arranged
in a most interesting style. Then
beautiful ballet dancer of figure
skater-the "Waltzing Winds"-fol-
lows. The "Lilt of the Latin" will
feature six of our band members
playing the Latin - American
rhythm instruments-bongo drums,
timbales, castenets, maracas, finger
drums, and of course, the regular
percussion instruments.
Miss Joan Austin has achieved an
enviable reputation in the Saline
Area for being one of the outstanding young musicians ever to b.e
graduated from this school. Not
only is Joan a fine clarinetist-having taken lessons on the clarinet
for about six years from the leading
clarinet players of the University
of Michigan Symphony Band, and
from instructors at Interlocken, but
also she is a-very excellent pianist,
singer, and a general all around
musician. She has studied privately
on both the piano and voice in addition to her clarinet. She has attended the National Music Camp at
Interlocken for three summers, and
this last summer held first chair in
the Bass Clarinet Section. It is our
great pleasure to be able to present
Joan in her solo at the clarinet.
The concert is open to the general public, and tickets may be purchased either at the door or from
band members themselves-75 cents
for adults, and 50 cents for students. The concert begins promptly at 7:30 with the Junior High
Bands, and at 8:00 the Senior High
Concert will begin. All bands will
be in uniform, and the concert
should be concluded about 9:15. The
proceeds of the concert will go into the Band Trip Fund, for the proposed Interlocken trip next August
The Band Parents Club will have a
display of records at the concert,
and other items of useful information. Be sure to attend this first
concert of the new season on Wednesday evening, December 11th, in
the Saline High School auditorium.
