Fascinating at Saline schools' Science Fair last weekend: Two of the fair guides, 14-year-old Arda and Karla
Hoffman, point to an exhibit on heredity prepared by Barbara Finkbeiner. Jane Steiner notes that the guides themselves make quite a study on the subject. Arda and Karla
are twin daughters of Dr. and Mrs. O. D. Hoffman. They're
not identical. Arda is three minutes older than her look-
alike sister. Karla can be distinguished from Arda by the
slight mole on her cheeck. She's also a fraction of an inch
taller. But aside from those slight differences, the two seem
to be built from exactly the same pattern. Their weights are
exactly the same, they share the same likes and dislikes in
foods, TV programs, subjects at school... their report cards
usually read like carbon copies . . . their soprano voices are
identical . . . they're alike right up to their blue eyes and
brown hair.
Not entered as a Science Fair exhibit, the Hoffman twins
nevertheless made a very attractive one.

showed "a great deal of promise" according to Jay Starkey,
High School science instructor
who was in charge of the event.
The projects ranged all the
way from chocolate cake to
space ships.
Starkey hopes that most of
them - whether or not they
were winners here — will be entered in the Southeastern Michigan Science Fair in Ann Arbor in April, he added, "but
that's up to the individual student".
Winners were cited in the junior and senior divisions here,
but not for the Elementary
School which entered only three
exhibits: a 4th grade class exhibit; a demonstration of magnetism by Nancy Starling, 3rd
grade; and an exhibit on chemical indicators by Tommy Bonich, 4th grade.
Jji the junior division, first
place girl winner was Janet
Wild, 8th grade, with an exhibit entitled "Six Simple Machines", models showing how
the machines are used.
First place boy was Michael
Carpentier, 8th grade, whose exhibit, "Zinc Alloy as Used in
Automotive Hardware", showed
steps in manufacture of such
hardware.
Second place went to Deborah
