IL M L THE Tit ASH carried
away in Saline's quarterly and regular weekly rubbish collections was
laid end to end ... city crews would
probably come along and pick it up
again. Nevertheless, it's a lot of
trash . .. from 1,061 residences
last week, as compared with only
908 residences in the second quarterly pick-up earlier this year. The
city is growing, and with it the problem of disposing of its discards.
It also costs a lot of money ...
$z8,600 in the 1969-70 city -budget,
for dumping privileges, equipment,
and personnel . . . and the personnel certainly earns a piece of the
money, in muscle and exertion. The
latter is supplied by (top picture)
Robert Tallman and Clayton Glover; Dale Wilson (at far right in
second picture); and Marvin Ros-
ander (not in photos). Dean Theurer usually operates the packer; but
Pete O'Mara drove last week while
Dean vacationed.
City to Obtain
New Packer
City Council has instructed
Administrator Mike Strait to
obtain bids on purchase or
lease-purchase of a new packer for rubbish pick-ups.
The one now in use was
purchased new two years ago,
but it is "getting a little bit
worn,'" Strait said; and thp
city has no "back-up equipment" for use if it breaks
down. A smaller packer which
Saline obtained-, used, from
the City of Dearborn, is not
large enough to handle some
of the trash collected here
according to Strait. Council
has authorized sale ,of the
smaller machine.
A packer of the size required by Saline costs from §21,-
000 to 522,000 new, Strait
said.
The pick-up draws a lot of spec-
. tators, too. Above, the bale-slinging
technique is admired by Mrs. Dick
