L. E, DAVY FOB MAYOR

The nominations made by the republicans of the city lor the municipal
election next Monday are nuch as to
receive the cordial approval of all
classes of our citizens. The indepen^
dent character and general ablility of
the candidates Ure' so marked as to
warrant the belief that, if elected,
they will give the city a clean, strong,
conservative business administration.
The nominating convention was
held at the city hall Monday evening.
J. R. Goodman was chosen chairman
and Jos. T. Northon secretary. James
Duhwoodic and Frank B. Doherty
were* appointed tellers and the voting
made it very evident that there w*s
no previously conceived slate but that
.the nominations were made as the
deliberate' will of the convention.
L. E. Davy, nominated on the first
ballot for mayor, is a successful business- man of well known ability and
integrity." Possessing large interes's
in Clare, his future is wrapped up with
the development of the city and, if
elected chief.executive, his first care
would be to conserve the city's interests. He is in no sense a politician
nor is he seeking to build up a political future. A' man of independent
action, Ife iffould be far less Jiable to
compromise the city's interests for
any clique or political consideration
than would be any mere professional
politician Mr. Davy as Clare's mayor
would stand for good clean city gov-,
ernment administring the laws to all'
alike with special favors to none.
E H. DeVogt was the convention
nominee for city clerk. He declining
the nomination the city committee
placed on the ballot in his stead the
name of Philip A. Bennett The present nominee has lived in Care near'y
five years, three years of which he
ably held the superintendence' of our
that of having been a former successful city treasurer. Io fact credit is
,due to bim as being the first city
treasurer to enforce tbe collection of
taxes so as 'to leave only a small
amount returnable each year and that
policy has been continued annually
from then till now. With a record «s
a man and a city officer that has made
him respected and popular^among all
classes of citizens the selection of Mr.
Buell as a candidate for city treasurer
is regarded as an especially wise one.
For justice of the peace O- B
Thisyer was the convention's choice,

LEW E. DAVY. REPU11LICAN CANDIDATE TOR. MAYOR.
city schoo's Later he bought a ha'f
.interest in the Sentinel printing
business He is a permanent resident,
pavs his share of the taxes, and is in
every way fitted for the ^performance
\of the duties devolving upon the c erk
of the city. The readers of the Sentinel who vote in Glare are asked to
tfemember Mr.- Bennett at the polls
next Monday.'
But one ballot was required for tlie
aelectioo'of a candid »te for cliy treasurer, the honor going by unanimous
! vote to Charles Buell. who <o a record
-of xaanv .years in .our oiidst, adds
but he declined and Jos. T. Worthon
was named in his place by the city
committee. Mr. "Nortbon is in every
way a suitable candidate. Possessed
of good €ducational qualifications, a
mun of sterling worth and, endowed
with good judgement, he would b# an
excellent justice of the peace. Not'a
little of his life has been spent just
south of town. Two years ag6 -he
located in Olare in the in sura nee. business and contributes his part t<fc tWe
city t'lxea. Taking his place as a'-tatiti
in our community and- respected for
whafcihe to, Mr. NurthaaJa worthy of
the sufferage of yie 'electors. Vot'e
for him next Monday.
In the ward caucuses no little Interest was manifested. Thosp. chosen as
nominees fur supervisor were selected'
for their ntness for the duties of tbe
office and not a9 a mattei of political
expediency. John Oliver, appointed
by the city council to till the vacabcy
caused by the death of tbe late Archie
Gordanier, is the nominee. While
Mr, Oliver did not have the assessing
of properly in his ward last .spring, he
bas had experience on the board of
supervisors and in other practical
ways in the office and is the logical
candidate to receive the vote of the.
people in the flrst ward. John Duncan
Is a man of practical business judgement and he would ably represent the
city on the county board of supervisors, actively participating in the transactions of that board and at home in
his own ward he would himself wisely
transact the business of the office.
Besppcted for his real worth and integrity and popular because of bis
genial wajs,,Mr. Duncan is the right
man to elect supervisor of the second
ward. Charles. Thurston is one of
our highly esteemed citizens. Not in
any sense a politician, he would
pUice? the interest of his ward first.
Last j ear the campaign cry of the
present supervisor's pany was 'Ton
many favors for the Dohertys" but
yet John Jackson, the present super-
vigorTrom the third ward and candidate for re-election, assessed Thurs
tou &S(in, undertakers, so as to give
them $37 05personal'tax on their undertaking business while John
Doheny In a similar business wasn't
assessed a cent thereon. JBu& Charles
Thurston as the ward's supervisor
would see to it that no taxable property, no matter by whom owned,
would be exempt from its share of tax-
tation. Vote for Charles Thurston for
supervisor for the third ward. "
The four candidates for aldermen
are all well known citizens Sitmuel
Northy of tbe first ward, if chosen to
the important utticc, will give it tils
fiiost. earnest attention and faithfully
discharge' the duties of councilman.
(H6 will oofc be biased io favor of any
particular interests but will zealously
guard the rights ot bis ward. The
second ward prcsetus two strong candidates in the perdona of Divid Fdx
and EuneMi.alstead. -The former is
just coniple&iJiK hia tlrat tefiu.and his
record entitles him to a second term
He siiould receive the Votes of the
electors because of what, he has accomplished directly in the way of improvements for his- ward. Keep those
improvements in mind wlien you go
to tne polls next Monday. Mr. Halstead is one of our esteemed citizens,
who thrcugh many years has.known
much of the workings of our city government. Possessed of good judgment, reliable in all his dealings, he
is just the man for alderman from the
second. Floyd Kane is one of our
clean, progressive young men. Honorable in life, faithful to duty and
favorably known to all, Mr. Kane is
worthy of the sufferage of the voters
of the third ward.
The Sentinel submits that as a
whole the. ticket is a strong onp.
There isn't a suggestion,of bossism
about it. It stands for clean city government. It is not a ticket dependent
on the button-holing, lining up process. It is not in the interest of 'any
clique or combination—but the city
itself. Mr. Voter, in spite of political
bosses, vote as ynu deem it best.
