INDUSTRIAL AND MUNICIPAL
PETOSKEY
There are many attractive feature
offered by Petoskey too the perspective
manufacturer and investor City
lots are steadily appreciating and for
several years real estate of all kinds
has showed a healthy cumulative value
In addition to vacant lots which
always prove a good investment and
yield fair profits there are some
splendid factory sites which are admirably
located These parcels can
be purchased at nominally low figure
res for liberal concessions will be
made in the way of sites for manufacturing
purposes Labor is ample
and taxes are low in Petoskey Shipping
facilities are splendid both by
rail and water Educational facilities
and manufacturing enterprises
have already range Petoskey mort

exerting influence· as an industrial
and !producing center Commercially
Petoskey is showing great strength
Her progressive firms are drumming
the contiguous territory with
the result that the city is now the
distributing center for the live towns
and cities from Mackinaw City to
Traverse City Petoskey is splendid
market f()r the farmers of tithes
community and hundreds of enterer
icing truck gardeners are netting big
profits from fruit and vegetables during
the big summer months The
past few years has witnessed considerable
movement in farm real estate
in Emit county and the heretofore
neglected but rich and fertile tracts
are being transformed into well appointed
farms
The assessed valuation of the city
of Petoskey for the fiscal year is approx.
irately $300000000 or viewed
at a conservative estimate is about
one-half of it actual market value
The rate of taxation()n for 1909 based
upon each $Ion assessed valuation
will be $20S Not very high when
taken into comparison with a great
many Michigan towns of two and
three times the size of Petoskey Petoskey
municipal affairs are being administered
at the present time along
the lines of Retrenchment and judicial
us economy Mayor Dark Detroiter
and the Board of Public Works
have made a creditable showing in
the handling of the city’s affairs
The bonded indebtedness at the
present time is a trifle over S% of
the assessed valuation or something
like $15100000 in round numbers
distributed as follows $44000 on the
municipal lighting plant $6sooo on
the water works and municipal improvement
t debt for parks streets
bridges etc. of $42000 The interest
on the bonds running ta the municipal
plants is more than taken care to
each year by the net earnings of
these plants For the present year
alone the municipal lighting plant
shows a net earning above interest
and maintenance of $800000
The water works is in a healthy
paying condition Sidewalk and street
construction is taken care ()f 2S%
and 33%% respectively coming from
the municipal improvement fund the
balance is spread upon the general
tax rolls Petoskey has efficient
police and fire departments Law

all times The work of the fire department
has been such that fire losses
are practically nothing

In addition to all of these Mr.
Cook finds time to take pictures for
the G R & 1 railroad company for
the quantities of advertising matter
they send out every year

our attractive country so
handsomely and extensively as these

to all Petoskey people as well as satisfaction
to himself
ALTON G COOK
The Post Card Man
For a number of years Mr. Cook
has been engaged in picture making
hardly a spot in this northern region
that has any pretension to beauty
picturesqueness or natural charm
halls escaped his camera and his sunsets
on the bay boat scenes ice
scenes and myriads of others have
helped make this one ·of the famous
spots on the map of Michigan The
making of post cards which he began
about five years ago has· Proved one
of the most successful lines he has
yet undertaken and as he is continually
working to improve and enlarge
it is hard to predict what he will
accomplish in the future
The colored post card scenes· of this
region are very popular with the reporters
and Mr. Cook recognizing
this fact began to put out a line ·of
nearly fifty different views that is
pronounced almost as handsome as
hand colored cards using the same
process as the ·big magazine houses
using the colors of yew red blue
and black in the order named
His latest effort is a half tone or
double tone which is very handsome
the finished card being a rich beautiful
bow almost a perfect imitation
of a photograph
Mr. Cook now publishes about 200
different views of Petoskey and surrounding
resorts the territory covered
reaching from Walloon Lake to
Cheboygan and all around Little
Traverse Bay He runs an exclusive
Post Card Store at 208 Midway
which is said to carry the most complete
line of cards of any in this region
and resorts compliment Mr.
Cook on his assortment His stock
consists of thousands of different
cards from the comic Ito the most
expensive hand painted cards In the
winter season Mr. Cook runs a
Job printing plant making a specie
of high class commercial work etc.
1s000 POPULATION IN 191s
To some the claim that Petoskey)

in 191s may seem absurd and exaggerate
ted beyond pos·sib1lity The trend
is toward a Greater Petoskey and a
close observation Of the duties that
have made creditable strides in the
way of population during the past
few years shows that they pulsated
with the same industrial energy and
life that _permeate Petoskey at the
present time Petoskey is ·growing she

Remnants of this powerful

and relates that the famous old chief

Cool and Bracing Boating Bathing Fishing Golfing and Motoring ( PETOSKEY IN 187s SCENE IN PETOSKEY safe That these banks weathered the financial storms of 190708 in the splendid man net in which they did is but proof of their SoIidity The policy of government of Petoskey is by no men’s conservative or puritanical The cosmopolitan population of the summer months demands a hospitable interpretation of the general laws and they are accorded an adm1nis traction that is liberal yet strict· I in keeping with law and older The present season has noted a good many movements in real estate and the outlook for a renewed acclivity in general building for 1909 looks decidedly good We believe that we are justified in making the prophecy that Greater Petoskey will enjoy a population of 1s000 in 191s Everybody boost and keep boosting roar Greater Petoskey and well get there estimated at fruity 2s000 to 30000 people Some of these guests ate residents of four months duration during each year A percentage each year by reason of the healthful environments of the Queen City of the North are becoming residents Emit county is fast being converted into an agricultural clunky The disappear earache of the pine and hardwood I forests no longer leaves an epoch of wild lands and underbrush for the farmer is pressing forward with team and plowshare and reclaiming the lark\s so wantonly dese1ted by the men of the axe The complexion of the soil in Emit county joss rich and strong and productive It is· bringing a fair price per acre and is attar citing settlers throughout the lower portion of Michigan and the north portion of Ohio Indiana and Illinois AU this can but !help boost Petoskey and render our clam foot a population of 1s000 people in 191s less a dream and more a possibility Petoskey must necessarily become the market for the agricultural sections of Emit county Her shipping fajitas are unexcelled both by rail and water Her financial institutions ate strong and substantial and their policies are Liberal yet Several _kinds of booklets albums of views miniatures folders and other interesting things in the picture Line find many appreciative buyers and ate on sale at all dealers His latest booklet is entitled Summer Resorts on Little Traverse Bay and is one of the handsomest souvenirs’ ever published of Petoskey and Northern Michigan In addition to all of these Mr. Cook finds time to take pictures for the G R & 1 railroad company for the quantities of advertising matter they send out every year The value of these posit cards and pictures is not limited to Mr. Cooks interests by any means their value to the city of Petoskey and this whole northern resort region is inertia ·blew Nothing else could advertise our attractive country so handsomely and extensively as these and his success is a matter of pride to all Petoskey people as well as satisfaction to himself ALTON G COOK The Post Card Man For a number of years Mr. Cook has been engaged in picture making hardly a spot in this northern region that has any pretension to beauty picturesqueness or natural charm halls escaped his camera and his sunsets on the bay boat scenes ice scenes and myriads of others have helped make this one ·of the famous spots on the map of Michigan The making of post cards which he began about five years ago has· Proved one of the most successful lines he has yet undertaken and as he is continually working to improve and enlarge it is hard to predict what he will accomplish in the future The colored post card scenes· of this region are very popular with the reporters and Mr. Cook recognizing this fact began to put out a line ·of nearly fifty different views that is pronounced almost as handsome as hand colored cards using the same process as the ·big magazine houses using the colors of yew red blue and black in the order named His latest effort is a half tone or double tone which is very handsome the finished card being a rich beautiful bow almost a perfect imitation of a photograph Mr. Cook now publishes about 200 different views of Petoskey and surrounding resorts the territory covered reaching from Walloon Lake to Cheboygan and all around Little Traverse Bay He runs an exclusive Post Card Store at 208 Midway which is said to carry the most complete line of cards of any in this region and resorts compliment Mr. Cook on his assortment His stock consists of thousands of different cards from the comic Ito the most expensive hand painted cards In the winter season Mr. Cook runs a Job printing plant making a specie of high class commercial work etc. 1s000 POPULATION IN 191s To some the claim that Petoskey) wi1l be a city with 1s000 inhabitants in 191s may seem absurd and exaggerate ted beyond pos·sib1lity The trend is toward a Greater Petoskey and a close observation Of the duties that have made creditable strides in the way of population during the past few years shows that they pulsated with the same industrial energy and life that _permeate Petoskey at the present time Petoskey is ·growing she less alive with a spirit of municipal progress that spells PROSPERITY Her citizens and business men are energetic broadminded and progressive They have one aim SI() far as Petoskey is concerned and that is a Greater Petoskey with a population of 1s000 in 191s Petoskey’s summer tourist population is conservatively Vito the odors of the forest \Vito the dew and damp of meadows With the curling smoke of wigwams \Vito the rushing of great rivers? * * * * * * * * I shou1d answer I should tell you From the forests and the prairies From the great lakes of the North 1and From the land of the Ojibwas end white actors The drama is beautifully costumed and staged with a realism almost startling and is managed by the author himself Mr. L O Armstrong Hiawatha was originally brought out at Descartes Ontario but being too far away from many who would like to see it was removed to Northern Michigan two seasons ago with the result most gratifying to those who visit the northern country It lasts through the entire summer season and is given with amplitude of accessories and the most scrupulous attention to detail Opportunity is also afforded the INDIAN PLAY HIAWATHA A1 WAYAGAMUG spectacular exhibition IS the very place where the Ojibwa of the old days camped when it blew on the Great Lakes for here he could always get a deer a bass or adore (favorite food of his) here were suitable soil and dilate for his corn beans and potatoes ·here grew the bark for his canoe covering cedar and all the roots necessary for its construction and here his innate love for the beautiful was satisfied here too in defense of it all the Ojibwa fought the Iroquois The drama Hiawatha ·is not only a thrilling and spectacular exhibition but it is a truthful representation of the Indian as the romantic figure The whole ·of L011gfenows famous legend is told necessarily omitting of course some of the minor parts The characters are all portrayed by members of the Ojibwa tribe The Indians in these roles are superior in their simplicity and realism to train For the past three seasons one of the features of the North country summer seasons has been the rend tin of the Ojibwa Indian drama Hiawatha presented by the Ojibwas themselves each day at Wayzata mug a beautiful lake some four miles from Petoskey Quite as original and unique in its conception setting and execution as the erstwhile famous Passion Play of Oberammergau Hiawatha charms all who see it The lake and its environments almost seem to have been designed for the 4 PETOSKEYUTHE GEM OF THE RESORTS Greater Petoskey AMOST CHARMING PLACE in Which to Pass the Heated Term Season From June to October Numerous Hotels and Boarding Houses With Ample
