SICK LEAVE POLICY REVISED:
It was moved by Lawrence Rah illy, seconded by Roger BusH e Id and carried
that the follow ing Sick Leave Pol icy as revised, be approved:
I, Definitions
(a ), The term "Faculty Member," shall refer to the defini tion of
facu lty adopted by the University Senate on January 6, 1969,
as follows:
"The University faculty shall include all those who have
an academic rank of lecturer, instructor, or above, and
whose appointment calls for at least ha lf-time service in
research or instTuction or in a combination of the two. It
shall a lso include the principal executive and admin istrative
officers, (President, vice presidents, deans),
professional li brarians, personne l counselors, curators,
and directors of administrative coordinators of the various
academic or research activities under the general adm inistration
of the Vice President of Academic Affa irs, and
others to whom fhe President, with the concurrence of

the appropriate academic deportment or di vision, may
assign an academic rank . "
Th is po li cy sholl also apply to any employees of the University
who are not covered by any other sick leave pol icy . Visi ting,
temporary, guest , and port- time faculty members who are
employed for one semester or more wi ll be entitled to the provisions
of this po licy for the duration of their empl oyment and
in proporti on to their work load .
(b). A working day shall be interpreted to mean any day of the week
providing such a day is a scheduled working day for the employee
even though he does not have classes scheduled . A work week,
for the purposes of this pol icy , shall be interpreted to mean any
five days of a regular week .
(c). Immediate family includes the employee's spouse, chi ldren,
parents or foster parents, parents- in - law, brothers, sisters, brothersin-
law, sisters-in-law, and any persan for whose financial or
physical ca re he has been pri ncipally responsible .
2, Si ck Leave Credi t
(a) . Full-time Ten a nd Twelve Month Employees
All faculty and other employees a re entitled to sick leove
benefi~ on the basis of one-ha lf day for each completed biweek
ly payroll period up to a maximum of two hundred days .
Facul ty and other employees working less than fu ll time are
en titled to that proportion of one - half day that thei r work
load is to fu ll time employment, Sick leave credit in excess
of the normal ten days may be earned by ten - month employees
on the fol lowing basis: One additional day for summer sessions
of at least two weeks; or two additional days for a summer
session of at least six weeks. At no time sholl the total
accumulation for anyone calendar year exceed 13 days.
(b) . Part-time Employees
Port- time employees hold ing regu lar part-time jobs are enti t led
to sick leave benefits in proportion to the time worked. Employees
who are working e ither full or part-time on temporary
jobs are not e nti t led to sick leave benefits,
(c) , Accumulation of Sick Leave Whi le Off Duty Because of Illness
All facu lty members and other employees will conti nue to acc rue
one- half day per bi-weekly poyrol l period sick leave credit as
long as the y a re on the payro ll even though they are absent from

duty. Empl oyees on leave of absence with aut pay will not
receive any sick leave credit during such leave.
(d) . Accumulation of Sick Leave While on Sabbatical leave
Sick leave is accumulated as long as a faculty member or other
employee is on the payroll. A person taking one semester
sabbatical leave would accumulate sick If!(Ive credit as though
present on campus; a person on sabbatical leave for two
semesters at half pay would accumulate sick leave cred it a t
one-half the normal rate.
(e) . Return of Faculty Members on leave Without Pay
When a facu lty member or other employee who has hod unpaid
leave from the University returns, his previous unused sick
leave allowance shall be placed to his credit.
(f) . New Facu lty Members and Other Employees Sick Leave Credit
Credit of ten days sick leave is given to any new faculty member
or employee when he is put on the bi-weekly payroll. This
amount is NOT to be credited accumu lated sick leave until the
new faculty member or employee has been on the bi-weekly
payro ll for ten months. After tha t the regular process of adding
one-ha lf day of sick leave credit per bi-weekly payrol l period would
app ly. If the new fac ulty member or employee does not stay in
the Univen;ity employ for ten months, the difference between the
amount of sick leave a ctually accrued and the amount of sick
leave used sholl be deducted from his Jast paycheck.
3. Use of Sick leave Credit
(a). Al l regu lar or part-time faculty and other employees may use
their sick leave credit in any month of the year in which they are
scheduled to be on the payroll, but only for the number of working
days in such month for which they are scheduled to be on duty at
the University.
(b) . kly regular or part- time faculty member or other employee wi ll be
considered absent if he fails to appear for his regularly scheduled
duties for one half day or more because of i llness or injury, and

&:!ch full QT part-time faculty membe r or other employee, desiring
consideration for sick leave benefits, may be required to file with

the Business Office either a physician 's statement or a sworn
affidavit that the cla im of absence for any of the reasons stated
above is bona fi de . Unti l such sla temen t is filed , if requested ,
a ll absences wi ll be considered as lost time and the employee's
pay will be reduced accordingly . If on employee e lects to use
his sick leave whi Ie off duty because of a compensable ac cident
or injury (one covered by Workmen 's Compensation), he may do
50 to the extent of his accumulated sick leave days and stil l
recei ve Workmen's Compensati on payment. If, however, he
elects to turn the compensation check in to the University, 2/3
of the sick l6<lve charged to th is accoun t shol l be restored to
his sick leave account.
(d) . Whenever on employee has used up all of his sick leave credit,
he wi ll be removed from the payroll until he reports back to duty.
(In computing terminal sick leave payments in terms (e),
(f), or (g) below, a fraction of a yea r will be prorated on
a monthly basis with one-ha lf or more of any month be ing
considered as on entire mon th).
(e) . A facu lty member or other employee who separa tes from the
Un iversity, wi ll receive payment, at his current rate of pay for
his unused sick leave on the following basis:
(I) Those who have been employed for 25 yeors or more
and have reached the age of 50, wi ll be paid 2/3
of their unused sick leave.
(2) Those who hove been employed ot Centra l Mich igon
University for a minimum of 10 years and have
reached me minimum age of 60 (or if wi lling to
accept prora ted pa yment starting at age 55, 55/60,
e tc.,) wi II receive 2/3 of the ir unused sick leave .
(f). A fac ulty member or other employee who separates from the
University service beca use of permanen t disabil ity shall be paid
2/ 3 of his unused sick leave. Such compensa tion will be made
at the employee 's current rate of pay .
(g). In case of death of on employee (regardle~ of age or length of
service a t Centrol Michigan University) payment of 2/3 of his
unused sick leave shall be made to the beneficiary or estate .
Such compensa tion will be made at the employee's current
rate of pay.
(h) . In case of death i n a faculty member's immediate family, the
employee will be given approved absence, as required by

circumstances not to exceed three days. Should circumstances
require on absence beyond three days, up to on additiona l five
days may be charged to 5i ck leave.
Sick leave may be util ized by a faculty member or other
employee for attendance at the funera l of a close friend or
relative.
Sick leave may be utili zed by a facul ty member or other employee
in the event of serious il lness, injury, or hospitalization
of a member of the employee 's immediate family which necessitates
the employee 's absence from duty. Sick leave vsed
under this provision sholl be limited to on accumulative tota l
not to exceed six days in anyone contractual year.
Sick leave may be utilized by a faculty member or on employee
for appointments with doc tor, de ntist , or other recognized
practitioner to the extent of time requi red to complete such
oppointments when it is not possible to arrange such appointments
for non - duty hours .
Staff paid under the faculty ond/or administrative salary schedule
may be granted approved absences by Divisional Vice Presidents
or the Deon of Student Personnel Services, ror reasons other than
dea th in the empl oyee's immed iate fam i ly . Absences of th is
type are recommended by the Departmental Cha irman or stoff
Supervisors, are in lieu of compensa tory time off, are of short
duration (not to exceed three (3) days in any fiscol year ), and
are for a specific and justi fiable purpose . Each request for on
approved absence, under the a uthority of this provision , sho ll
be considered on the basis of i ts individual merit.
All absences from worl< other thon approved sick leove, the
approved obsences noted in (0, (k), ond (I) above, scheduled
voca tion days, and compensotory leave time wi ll be without
pay and proper deductions will be mode from the employee 's
paycheck.
4. Records and Reports
(0) . The Business Office sha ll ma intain a sick leove record on al l
employees . The record shal l be credited with earned sie:k leave
credit each month and debited periodica lly as sick leave benefits
are used .
(b) . Staff members must notify their immedia te supervisor, a t the
earliest opportunity, when they wi ll be off work because of
il lness.

The immed iate supervisor is charged with the responsibi li ty
of reparti ng to the Busi ness Offi ce of the Universi ty on each
payroll report all absences in his Department which are
chargeable aga inst sick leave credit. This will be the
original record from which the Business Office will secure
the informat ion for the permanent record. In addition, each
Department or Division Chairman shol l report verbal ly to the
President's Office facu lty absences in his Deportment for that
day and service stoff absences to the Business Office .
VICE PRESIDENTS, SELECTION OF:
It was moved by James Umphrey, seconded by Mn. Jean Backus and carried
tha t the following omendmeM regard ing the selection of Vice Presidents be
accepted:
"Vice Presidents sha ll be selected and appointed by the President
acting with the advice of a screen ing commi ttee of ten members,
four of whom shall be elected by the Senote, and six of whom
shall be appointed by the President after consu ltation with the
Adv isory Counc i I. "

It was announced by President Boyd that the admission of 12,700 students
has been set for the 1969 fall Semester. Admissions standards wi ll remoin

Dean Curtis E. Nosh was introduced and Il'Dde a presentation on the structure
and objectives of the School of Education .
