Leaves of Absence:
BE IT RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees acknowledges receipt
of the administration's recarmendatlons for sabbatical leaves
for 30 faculty mefl'tlers ( Items 39-69). The Board recognizes
that the vast majority of the reconmended sabbatical leaves
are made possible wi t hout expenditure of additional resources
because of efforts comm i tted by other membe rs of the facu lty
and the Board e~p r esses appreciation for this coope ration.
Sabbatical leollves are granted by pe rmi ss ion of the Soard to
further the Interests of CMU as well as the faculty member.
Si gnificant reduction in support of the University by the State
of Michigan has In terrrupted the normal processes of the Institution.
At this time, the Soard cannot fo resee whe ther the
c;:ollectlve bargaining process affecting the faculty will result
in the necessIty of reducing the size of the faculty. If the
size of the facu lty Is reduced, the services of those reconmended
for sabbatical wIll l Ike ly be necessary in order to continue

furnishing a quality educationa l prog ram to the studen ts
who attend the Institution and, in tha t case, the pu rposes
of the sabb;nic.lI leaves would not fur t her the interest of
CMU because of the need to provide Inst ruct ion to students.
The Boerd regrets thet bec.luse of the financl.ll difficulties
f",clng the UniversIty, it muU teke .lc cion whIch suspends
